The wait is almost over: It's been officially confirmed that Hollow Knight: Silksong will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025. The followup to the massively successful Metroidvania Hollow Knight has been in the works for over six years, with developer Team Cherry sharing few updates about the game's progress. The team has been so quiet, in fact, that many fans have been speculating whether the title would be stuck in development limbo like many other games.

However, it seems that the game is indeed alive and well and getting ready to launch this year. Silksong will be ing other titles on the Nintendo Switch 2 lineup this year, according to the April 2 Nintendo Direct streamed on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel. The stream showed off a very brief look at gameplay footage from the game, with an X post from Nintendo of Europe and the official Hollow Knight Discord channel both confirming that the game is, in fact, actually coming out this year.

After A 6-Year Wait, Hollow Knight: Silksong Is Officially Coming In 2025

The Game Remains One Of The Most Anticipated Titles

Silksong was first revealed to be in development in 2019, but since then, Team Cherry has been very quiet about the status of the game and its development. Calling fans "eager" to play Silksong would be an understatement, as the game has been the most wishlisted title on Steam for many months until it was dethroned by inZOI last month.

Team Cherry's choice to remain quiet as it worked on Silksong left the community torn, with some believing that the lack of communication meant the game was in trouble. The concern led to the studio's Marketing and PR director Matthew Griffin, also known as "Leth," to assure fans that the game "is real, progressing, and will release" in an X post earlier this year. It seems that fans had no cause for concern, though—even though Silksong doesn't yet have a specific release date, it will finally be available for the community to enjoy (and repeatedly die, probably) sometime this year.

A Nintendo Switch 2 Release Explains The Silksong Chocolate Cake Controversy

This January saw Silksong at the center of a controversy, and it all started with a picture of a cake. Team Cherry member Little Bomey changed their X profile picture to a slice of chocolate cake and told fans to keep their eyes "closed" for something big on its way, which sent the Hollow Knight community into a frenzy trying to decipher the cryptic clue. Internet sleuths found out that the picture was from a recipe posted on April 2, so when the April 2 Nintendo Direct was announced the following day, fans naturally assumed that Team Cherry was hinting at a Switch 2 release for Silksong.

The team was quick to deny this, trying to convince the community that sometimes a cake is just a cake, but by then the damage had already been done. The entire chocolate cake debacle left fans feeling slighted and asking Team Cherry to just communicate with them without any tricks.

Now that Silksong has been revealed for Switch 2 after all, the entire episode makes a little more sense and it turns out that the cake was not a lie, after all. Nintendo is incredibly protective of its properties, so even a hint at the console before Nintendo was ready to reveal it could have strained the relationship between the gaming giant and the indie Team Cherry. Now that the Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially revealed, Hollow Knight: Silksong fans can expect to see some more open communication from the team.
