It’s been 6 years since the release of Hollow Knight and 4 since its sequel 10 Metroidvanias To Play While Waiting For Hollow Knight: Silksong
Hollow Knight: Silksong Has Been Delayed
Unfortunately, Hollow Knight: Silksong definitely won’t be released in its expected May-June 2023 window. Matthew Griffin of Team Cherry broke the news in a tweet simply saying “We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing.”
While delays are never happy news for fans, they can be beneficial and result in a better, more polished game overall. As Matthew Griffin promises, “we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can.” With the latest games often plagued by problems at launch, it’s hopeful Team Cherry is taking this time to ensure they don’t follow the mistakes so many Triple-A games are currently making.
Everything We Know About Hollow Knight: Silksong So Far
Team Cherry has been remarkably tight-lipped about the development and content of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Prior to the May tweet announcing its delay, the last news received was almost a full year before when the trailer dropped at Xbox & Bethesda’s Showcase. However, Matthew Griffin’s tweet also mentions “We’re excited by how the game is shaping up, and it’s gotten quite big”, suggesting Team Cherry will be increasing the map and game size from the original Hollow Knight’s approximate 41-hour runtime.
Hollow Knight: Silksong was originally intended to be DLC for the original Hollow Knight, but as the game grew both in ambition and size, it was revised into a fully-fledged sequel starring a previous antagonist, Hornet. Hollow Knight but as the story and game grew more and more ambitious, Team Cherry announced it would instead be a fully-fledged sequel. Throughout the game, Hornet will encounter up to 150 new enemies, and new locations across the Kingdom of Pharloom, as they climb to reach its citadel. Unlike the original Hollow Knight’s use of soul to heal, Silksong will use silk, leaving behind a bundle of silk when dying. There will also be a new perma-death mode, called “Silk Soul Mode” that mimics the features of “Steel Soul Mode”, although allegedly with bigger changes from the base game of Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Delays aren’t always bad news and it’s likely that Hollow Knight: Silksong will benefit from the added time, care, and attention given by the developers. It's also possible fans will finally receive more information at the 2023 Xbox & Bethesda Showcase. With this latest update, the earliest window that can be expected for Silksong to release seems to be, realistically, either late 2023 or, more likely, sometime in 2024. When it does release, Hollow Knight: Silksong will be accessible on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 4 and 5; and above all else, will hopefully be worth the wait.
