The HP-loss mechanic in Mydei’s kit in Honkai: Star Rail 3.1 show that he will operate as a main DPS in team comps.
According to the leaks, Mydei will have an HP-loss mechanic, that will see him constantly consume his own health to empower his Skill, thus dealing more damage to opponents, but putting himself at risk. Another point of the leak is that Mydei’s abilities scale off his Max HP stat, which means he will likely have a huge health bar compared to other characters. Mydei is not the first HP-scaler with HP-loss mechanics. In fact, there are various similarities between Mydei and Blade in Honkai: Star Rail, if his leaked kit is accurate. However, HP-loss may be making a huge comeback.
Grit May Get An HP-Loss Buff In Honkai: Star Rail 3.2's Pure Fiction
Losing HP May Help Accumulate Grit
In fact, HP-loss may continue in the spotlight after Mydei’s release in Version 3.1. According to information provided by the leaker known as HomDGCat, the Pure Fiction activity may get a buff to the Grit mechanic benefitting characters who lose HP. As seen in the leak, during the Surging Grit mechanic in Pure Fiction, when an ally uses Skill, they lose a portion of HP. After an ally uses their Skill, they heal a percentage of HP. Furthermore, the leak says that after an ally is attacked or loses HP, additional Grit Value in Honkai: Star Rail will be accumulated.

Honkai Star Rail 3.2 Leaks: New MoC Mechanic May Push For Anaxa
Memory of Chaos may get a new gameplay mechanic in Honkai: Star Rail 3.2 that should be perfect for Anaxa, a rumored new Amphoreus character.
The leak was shared in a post tagged as “Reliable” on Reddit. This means that, in order to trigger the benefits that stem from Grit, players may be incentivized to lose HP. It’s worth noting that the wording in the leak is ambiguous, leaving enough space for the interpretation that the team’s other member may lose and heal HP when an ally uses a Skill. Otherwise, the character using the Skill would lose HP and heal their loss, immediately, possibly to trigger the HP-loss mechanic that helps accumulate the extra Grit Value mentioned in the Honkai: Star Rail 3.2 leak.
Characters Like Mydei, Blade, & Jingliu Will Thrive Under Honkai: Star Rail 3.2's Leaked Buff
These Units Could Accelerate Accumulation Of Grit In Pure Fiction
If the leak is true and HP-loss is at the center of the buff, characters who trigger HP-loss will likely be those with the biggest advantage. This includes Blade, Jingliu, and, possibly, Mydei. While Blade’s Skill is limited in the sense that it only serves to boost his Normal Attack, his enhanced Skill consistently drains his HP, which should be enough to help him accumulate extra Grit during combat. Jingliu, on the other hand, drains HP from her allies, but that could be enough to trigger the leaked buff for Grit in Pure Fiction in Honkai: Star Rail 3.2.

Honkai Star Rail 3.1 Leaks: An Unexpected Quality-Of-Life Update Could Save Players' s
A new quality-of-life update has been leaked for Honkai: Star Rail 3.1 that could help restore some items that players have accidentally lost.
The leaks say that Mydei’s Skill is the core of his rotation and what immediately consumes his HP, and that alone could trigger the buff – when that is combined with the rumors that the usage of Skills will drain more HP, Mydei may be the perfect character to take full advantage of the leaked buff to Pure Fiction. Furthermore, the leaks about Mydei’s kit mention that he has a taunt mechanic, which draws enemies’ attention. If this is true, he could have an extra source of HP-loss in Honkai: Star Rail, as getting attacked also helps accumulate more Grit.
As seen in Mydei’s leaked kit on Honey Hunter World, he can use his Ultimate to taunt the target and adjacent targets.
While characters with natural HP-loss mechanics embedded in their kits are likely the ones who will most shine during the rumored Pure Fiction update in Version 3.2, other characters may still be able to do a fine job accumulating the extra Grit. Using characters and teams that rely more heavily on Skill usage may be a great way of triggering the HP-loss. Dan Heng - Imbibitor Lunae may benefit from the rumored buff to Grit, for example, though his team comp would also rely on a Skill point provider like Hanya or Sparkle in Honkai: Star Rail.
HP-Loss Is One Of Honkai: Star Rail's Best Mechanics & It May Be Here To Stay
The Mechanic’s Risk-Reward Factor Tends To Pay Off
The HP-loss mechanic is not a new one, as it debuted fairly early and it was a success with the releases of Blade and Jingliu during the game’s first year of content. Using a character’s HP or that of their teammates in order to enhance their own power is a great and fun way to add an extra layer of strategy to combat. While there is some risk in lowering any character’s current HP, the trade for more damage often tends to pay off. HP-loss has not been absent but has been put in the background over the past months.

Honkai Star Rail 3.1 Leaks: Herta's Store May Get A Much-Needed F2P Update
A new F2P 5-star Light Cone has been leaked for Honkai: Star Rail, showing that Herta’s Store will receive an exciting new update in the patch.
This is especially true when considering the game’s second year of content, where Super Break DMG and follow-up attacks in Honkai: Star Rail took priority with most character releases. Characters like Firefly, Boothill, and Rappa helped create the basis for the Harmony Trailblazer to show their potential as a Super Break unit, while characters like Feixiao, Moze, Lingsha, Aventurine, and even Robin helped create a wider roster of units specialized in using follow-up attacks in combat. Now, it seems like HP-loss is making a well-deserved comeback with Mydei’s release in Version 3.1 and it may last for a while.
If the leak about the Pure Fiction buff in Version 3.2 is of any indication, the focus on HP-loss may remain for some more time, possibly staying in the limelight together with the recently-added Path of the Remembrance. For now, however, all of these leaks should be considered with a grain of salt, as they may be incorrect, incomplete, or subject to change. As such, it’s best to await official confirmation from HoYoverse when it comes to Mydei’s gameplay kit and the eventual rumored buff to the Grit mechanic in Pure Fiction, allegedly starting in Honkai: Star Rail 3.2.
