The first season of Game of Thrones trend of Targaryens being a stone's throw away from evil.

There remain a couple of innocent Targaryens, but the majority of the characters that the house has given audiences are fascinating, morally gray characters and a few individuals who are straight-up evil.

Lucerys Velaryon

Elliot Grihault as Lucerys Velaryon in House Of The Dragon's Season 1 Finale

Little Lucerys Velaryon was shown to be nothing more than a sweet, loving child loyal to his family and scared to disappoint them by not performing his duty well enough. This helped make Lucerys' death the saddest of the season.

While he did cut out Aemond's eye, he did it for the protection of his family, hardly with any malicious intent. He was insecure and scared but also brave and willing to do anything for his family, an irable set of traits that fans will miss in the future.

Heleana Targaryen

Alicent Hightower and Heleana Targaryen in House of the Dragon episode 6

In of how they are showcased in season 1, Heleana Targaryen is by far the most innocent and sympathetic of the Greens. She is a unique and sweet soul who deserves better than being stuck with Aegon.

She is, ironically, somewhat of a black sheep among the Greens, thanks to her lack of power and her seeming lack of ambition for it. Heleana comes off as far kinder and more thoughtful than anyone else in her family, which, coupled with her eccentric side, makes her an interesting and not-at-all-evil character.

Jacaerys Velaryon

Prince Jacaerys Jace Velaryon Harry Collett House Of The Dragon Episode 10

Jacaerys Velaryon, heir to the Iron Throne in the eyes of those who view Rhaenyra as the rightful Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, may go on to do some morally questionable things but is, as of now, a relatively innocent Targaryen.

He may have taken part in some childish torment of his cousin, and the death of his brother may well drive him to violence down the line. For now, though, he remains nothing but a strong, loyal child who wants to do right by his mother and the rest of the family, with no selfish personal ambition or cruelty.

Maester Aemon Targaryen

Game of Thrones Maester Aemon

As far as the Targaryens who audiences meet in Game of Thrones go, Maester Aemon is the least evil outside Jon Snow. An elderly Maester at the end of his life, Aemon was shown as nothing but kind.

What makes this kindness all the more impressive is the fact that he had pretty much lost everything. He even calls out to his brother Egg on his deathbed in one of the show's saddest moments just to underline the tragedy of this sweet man's life. Not only one of the least evil Targaryens but one with the purest of hearts, as shown repeatedly as he helped the likes of Jon, Sam, and Gilly.

Rhaenys Velaryon

Eve Best as Rhaenys Targaryen in House of the Dragon episode 9

Fans will look back down the line at the moment when Rhaenys could have killed the Greens and revel in the possibilities. That moment reaffirms how not evil Rhaenys has been to this point.

The Queen that never was may well have made for a better monarch than Viserys, but she also let go of all personal ambition for the throne, something that should be applauded. She basically lived her life for her family out of love for them, shown further by her and Corlys ing the Blacks. Whereas many Targaryens are driven by a lust for power, Rhaenys simply wants what is best for her family.

King Viserys Targaryen

Paddy Considine will have awards hurled at him in the coming months for his turn as the good, incompetent, and complex Viserys Targaryen, who was many things but who was not evil.

Yes, he does allow his wife to die for his heir and makes some wildly stupid, selfish mistakes that lead to the Dance of Dragons, making him one of HotD's most influential characters. But he also tries to keep peace in the realm and fights valiantly and unwaveringly for his family, Rhaenyra specifically. Viserys was flawed but is arguably the least-evil King of the Seven Kingdoms that fans have met on-screen yet.

Rhaenyra Targaryen

Rhaenyra smiling at her dragon on House of the Dragon

The look on Rhaenyra's face to close out season 1 of House of the Dragon is one that promises vengeance, violence, and war. For now, though, she is on the lesser side of evil Targaryens.

She is far from perfect and does some selfish, deceptive things. However, she has not committed any atrocities yet and has been positioned as the show's main protagonist. In the future, she will likely muddle further into the moral gray occupied by Daemon. Still, for now, she is someone who tried to fight Aegon's coronation peacefully, tried to protect her family, and kept a cool head while others promised bloodshed.

Aemond Targaryen

Aemond Targaryen looking shocked in House of the Dragon season 1 finale

Aemond has emerged from season 1 as one of the show's most fascinating characters and, in his accidental killing of Lucerys, could well be named one of the evilest Targaryens seen on-screen.

It was an accident; until this point, Aemond has not displayed much pure evil. He has undoubtedly come across as a villain with his treatment of Rhaenyra's children and his ambition for the Iron Throne. However, his layered character and lack of despicable acts before killing Lucerys keep him below some other Targaryen war criminals.

Aegon Targaryen

Aemond behind Aegon in House of the Dragon

King Aegon Targaryen, crowned so in the penultimate episode of House of the Dragon, may not have murdered and committed many unforgivable monstrous acts. Still, the seeds of his evil are there for everyone to see.

His constant drunken antics, assault, and reveling in the cheering public during his coronation are just signs of things to come from the young King. He is nowhere near the level of the evilest Targaryens yet, but he is still incredibly unlikable and someone who can only become more hated as the Dance of Dragons unfolds, with fans already asking questions about how awful Aegon will be as King.

Daemon Targaryen

The Rogue Prince and the internet's current favorite bad boy Daemon Targaryen is perhaps the best character of House of the Dragon's first season purely because he is such a fascinating anti-hero.

Daemon pretty much hates everybody that is not his family. Willing to brutally murder and berate anyone who crosses him, Daemon may be on what many consider to be the 'good' side of the Dance of Dragons, but he is far from a good person, and he's definitely the bad guy in plenty of people's stories already.
