It's unlikely that there could ever be another TV show exactly like House, but CBS' new medical drama comes pretty close. Despite premiering more than 12 years after House ended, the aforementioned series has many of the qualities that made fans love Hugh Laurie's show. It might not be exactly the same, but it's a great replacement. So, if fans have been desperately searching for another show that could fill the House-shaped holes in their heart, CBS has the solution.

Although there have been rumors about a possible House revival, creator David Shore hasn't confirmed it's happening. Some stars (like Peter Jacobson) have expressed they would be interested in returning, though.

House premiered on November 16, 2004, and impressively ran for eight seasons and 177 episodes. Over the course of its time on Fox, the medical drama was one of the biggest series on TV. House received stellar ratings, won several awards (including five Emmys), and was beloved by many. When it ended on May 21, 2012, many attempted to find similar shows. Twelve years later, in January 2025, House's perfect medical drama replacement has arrived.

CBS' Watson Explained

The Show Is A Modern Take On Sherlock Holmes

Watson premiered on Sunday, January 26, 2025, on CBS, and is perfect for those who loved House. The medical drama TV series, created by Craig Sweeny, pulls inspiration from Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, revolving around the iconic character of John Watson, Sherlock's sidekick and confidant. Morris Chestnut stars as Watson, who is reeling from his friend's apparent death one year prior. Sherlock leaves Watson with a lot of money, prompting him to move from London to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and open the Holmes Clinic to continue his career as a physician.

If House were to get rebooted, Hugh Laurie would likely be involved with the new TV show, but there is an interesting way to do it without him.

Watson Is The Perfect House Replacement Show

House & Watson Are Similar Characters

By removing the mystery behind Sherlock's death and the Sherlock Holmes lore, Watson is a great replacement for House. Both Watson and House are snarky, but brilliant doctors with teams full of proteges and specialists. Of course, House is much more cynical than Watson, but the similarities remain. While speaking to TV Insider, creator Craig Sweeny teased Watson's season 1 arc, and his comment further proves the physician's similarity to House. Sweeny said:

"[Watson] has a very serious traumatic brain injury, and that's going to be a major plot point in the season. He's self-medicating, and Moriarty's ability to monkey with those medications is a very important thing as we advance through the season."

As many will , Hugh Laurie's House was addicted to Vicodin. Meanwhile, Watson will be self-medicating in the new CBS series. However, not only are the characters alike, but the two shows' premises are parallel. The medical dramas explore mysterious medical cases that the characters must solve to treat their patients. Ultimately, if one loves and misses House, Watson is the answer.
