This list contains spoilers from House of the Dragon season 1.The final days of the dragons are beginning to unfold as the Dance of the Dragons has commenced in Game of Thrones, yet it’s soared over such opposition to become HBO’s new flagship program. The first episode generated the highest viewership for an HBO premiere ever, and the numbers have only gotten better.

In House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, prophecy, magic, and mystical beasts serve as important foundations for the unfolding tales and the culture of Westeros as a whole. Though their tones are vastly different, there are many similarities between this world and that of Harry Potter, including the importance of houses. Were they to crossover, the House of the Dragon would be divided between the four houses of Hogwarts, and although most of the characters are conniving or power-hungry, they would not all land in Slytherin.

Rhaenyra Targaryen - Gryffindor

Rhaenyra Targaryen as a Gryffindor

Newly crowned Queen Rhaenyra I is a tricky one, and she could cause a hatstall, like Minerva McGonagall or Peter Pettigrew. Most would probably think Slytherin because of ambition alone, but in reality, it would likely be between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor for her astuteness and boldness, respectively. In the end, the Sorting Hat would send her to the red halls of Gryffindor Tower.

Rhaenyra exemplifies both the good and the bad of being a Gryffindor. She is unflinchingly brave, yet reckless. Over the years since first learning about Aegon’s prophecy from her father, she has developed a bit of a hero mentality just like Harry did while he was at Hogwarts.

Alicent Hightower - Slytherin

Alicent Hightower as a Slytherin

Alicent’s sorting would probably be quick, and green shall remain her house color, as she would be a Slytherin. This is very interesting to contemplate as House of the Dragon gives Alicent a compelling update, making her far more sympathetic. In Fire & Blood, she emulates all the cruelty and deviousness Slytherins are often ed for.

However, in House of the Dragon, while still a clear Slytherin, it’s for different reasons. Over the season, Alicent becomes cunning, determined, and confident, learning how to play this game of thrones.

Daemon Targaryen - Slytherin

Daemon Targaryen as a Slytherin

There’s no doubt that Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, is a Slytherin like Alicent. While his heart is quite noble and his loyalty to Rhaenyra and even Viserys can’t be doubted, he will always take the treacherous and conniving path to achieve his goals. One of his greatest desires is to prove himself truly worthy in the eyes of his brother and strike fear in his enemies.

With his trusty dragon as seen throughout season 1, Caraxes, and his appreciation for Valyrian traditionalism, he would, unfortunately, fit right in with the pure-bloods of Slytherin. He’d also most certainly be on the Quidditch team, and while he’d make for a great chaser, Daemon would want the glory of being the seeker, whether he’s good at it or not.

Viserys Targaryen - Hufflepuff

Viserys Targaryen as a Hufflepuff

Like Alicent, King Viserys I is different in the books. While he maintains his complacent and lax nature, in House of the Dragon he is more contemplative and nuanced, with George R. R. Martin even preferring this version over the one he wrote. Viserys has a deep devotion to Targaryen history, enhanced by his knowledge from Aegon’s prophecy, which would suggest Ravenclaw for him, but in truth, he still is best sorted into Hufflepuff.

His main motivations are preserving the peace within his family and kingdom, though he is unfortunately blind to the foundations crumbling around him. He is loyal to a fault when it comes to his family and optimistic even when signs should tell him to behave differently.

Otto Hightower - Ravenclaw

Otto Hightower as a Ravenclaw

It could be "like father, like daughter," and thus, Otto Hightower would also be a Slytherin. He certainly has the ambition to that claim. However, in truth, Otto would likely have been sorted to Ravenclaw instead with him developing his hunger for power later in life when he first gets a taste of the influence the Iron Throne provides.

Otto comes from Oldtown, home base for the Maesters and their vast collection of knowledge. He just seems like someone who spent his youth pouring over scroll after scroll, learning as much as he could. Funnily enough, Rhys Ifans has actually been a Ravenclaw, having played Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.

Rhaenys Targaryen - Ravenclaw

Rhaenys Targaryen as a Ravenclaw

It finally took House of the Dragon's penultimate episode for Rhaenys Targaryen to show her true potential in the story. Nevertheless, throughout season 1, she’s proved herself to truly be the wisest character in the series, perfectly representing her sorting into Ravenclaw. She is the character who best understands the way of the world.

After being ed over in the Great Council of 101 AC, Rhaenys largely abandoned her ambition, choosing instead to apply herself to maintain her family. Given all she knows, she is someone Rhaenyra is going to want by her side for as long as possible, a Ravenclaw who gives sage, yet blunt advice.

Corlys Velaryon - Gryffindor

Corlys Velaryon as a Gryffindor

Rhaenys leaves the ambition to her husband, Corlys Velaryon. Yet his isn’t out of true greed, but a desire for glory for him and his family. Like Rhaenyra, there is a hero complex. With that and an eagerness to fight, the Sorting Hat would quickly sort him into Gryffindor. No one could ever doubt Corlys’ bravery and chivalry as he would always lead the charge into battle.

The Sea Snake might instead be known as the Sea Lion as he'd sport the red and gold of Gryffindor for all to see, with all the same pride he does for the seahorse of House Velaryon. Supposedly, a Sea Snake spin-off is in the works, which would also showcase his penchant for adventure.

Criston Cole - Gryffindor

Criston Cole as a Gryffindor

Without a doubt, Criston Cole would also be sorted into Gryffindor. The shining and noble knight started eager to prove himself, but years have hardened him into a self-righteous and cruel person. He emulates all the dangerous extremes of being a Gryffindor.

Criston became more and more bold and rash, letting his ego and anger push him forward. He rarely thinks before he acts and would quickly solve any problem with his sword rather than his brain.

Larys Strong - Slytherin

Larys Strong as a Slytherin

Larys Strong is the epitome of a Slytherin in House of the Dragon. From his first moment on-screen, he is analyzing everyone and everything, developing all sorts of plans on how to manipulate it all for his advantage.

As he did in King’s Landing, Larys would surely create his own group of bullies just like Voldemort had – although he clearly wouldn’t have gotten away with cutting out their tongues at Hogwarts. He is someone that will make sure whatever he does benefits him, whether for more power or self-preservation.

Aegon Targaryen - Hufflepuff

Aegon Targaryen as a Hufflepuff

It might be a strange thing to see King Aegon II in Hufflepuff, but that's mostly because it’s the most welcoming house, and he wouldn’t fit into the others. His boldness solely comes from the inherent privilege of his station, not any sense of justice or nobility, and he is also complacent to ever be considered wise or clever.

In fact, he is disinterested in ruling, wishing for a relaxing life elsewhere just like his father. To be frank, his cruelty would earn Aegon a one-way ticket out of Hogwarts and, hopefully, to Azkaban.

Aemond Targaryen - Slytherin

Aemond Targaryen as a Slytherin

Despite being the second son, Aemond Targaryen has prepared himself to rule, leading him to claim that he is the next in line to Criston Cole while they searched for Aegon. The Sorting Hat wouldn’t even need to touch his head before it would shout his placement into Slytherin.

He is more like his grandfather, Otto, than his father, Viserys, as he is eager to gain more and more power. Although he does show some softness with his mother and sister, Aemond is vindictive and brutal as best shown above Shipwrecker Bay in the season finale.

Helaena Targaryen - Ravenclaw

Helaena Targaryen as a Ravenclaw

Queen Helaena’s premonitions throughout season 1 the likes of other important dreams and prophecies like Daenerys’ own dreams. This update to her character makes her quirky, yet wise, and incredibly enticing to watch, just like Luna Lovegood. Thus, Helaena would be sorted into Ravenclaw.

She would probably love her time at Hogwarts, being able to put her interests and talents to good use. She’d excel at Divination and Care of Magical Creatures, focusing on her studies rather than all the drama unfolding around her.

Jacaerys Velaryon - Hufflepuff

Lucerys Velaryon as a Hufflepuff

Jacaerys Velaryon could certainly follow in his mother’s footsteps and Gryffindor, but Hufflepuff might be a better place. His dedication and loyalty best showcase what makes Hufflepuffs great, and he’d be right at home in their dormitory by the kitchen.

He is hardworking, and the eagerness he shows isn’t necessarily to prove himself for his glory but to better his mother’s cause and his family as a whole. He is, unfortunately, a bit aloof to the real way of the world and probably too trusting, which could end up costing him.
