The ending of the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother's ending controversy is still a topic that audiences frequently discuss. After a long journey and hundreds of episodes, the identity of Ted Mosby's (Josh Radnor) wife, and mother of their children, is finally revealed in the last episode of How I Met Your Mother's penultimate season. However, audiences still can’t believe Tracy's (Milioti) disastrous fate, even years later.

Towards the end of How I Met Your Mother season 9's "Last Forever, Part 2," it's revealed that Tracy es away from an unknown disease a few years before Ted begins his story to their children. In a recent episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Tracy actress Cristin Milioti reflected on How I Met Your Mother's shocking finale. Milioti discussed shows she had starred in but hadn't seen before being cast, and How I Met Your Mother was one of them: "I'm glad that I didn't [see the show]… I didn't understand the weight [of the Mother]."

Milioti's remark is surprising, considering the name of the show, but she seems confident that being unaware of the importance of her character worked in her favor. However, Milioti, Dax Shepard, and co-host Monica Pan also discussed the fan response to How I Met Your Mother's finale. Check out their comments below:

Milioti: I didn't understand the weight... I'm in it for like six episodes... People had strong reactions to that... I also was pretty good at sheltering myself from [the fan response] as well. But I definitely didn't understand the weight.

Pan: Yeah, because people are like, what? We don't even know her... We've been here for eight seasons.

Milioti: It's a very famously contested finale.

What This Means For How I Met Your Mother

Milioti Failing To Watch The Show First Doesn't Impact Her Performance

Ultimately, Milioti's comments don't change the fate of How I Met Your Mother. However, it does prove that even years after the show's end, this topic is something that will follow the actress for the rest of her career. Even though there are clues to Tracy's death throughout How I Met Your Mother, it's still gutting, especially as audiences waited so patiently to find out her identity, only for her to be killed off at the last moment. However, this also means that when Milioti shot the scene with Tracy and Ted in the hospital, she had no inclination of how shocking this would be for viewers.

Our Take On Cristin Milioti's Comments About How I Met Your Mother's Ending

Milioti's Lack Of Knowledge Of HIMYM Might Have Been A Good Thing

The fact that Milioti didn't see the show before being cast as the iconic character is strange, but it didn't affect her performance as Tracy. Because Tracy is such an enigmatic figure throughout the show, there are endless possibilities regarding who she is and how she meets Ted. How I Met Your Mother is one of Cristin Milioti's best TV shows, and it helped launch her career even further, but the sitcom isn't the only one she hadn't seen before starring in it, as she explained in the podcast.

Why was actress Cristin Milioti chosen to play the Mother in How I Met Your Mother? We break down the decision and explain why she was a great fit.

Therefore, Milioti's performance as Tracy is a complete blank slate. There are benefits and hindrances to this approach. She may not have been initially aware of who the Mother needed to be, but she helped herself in a way because she was able to make the character her own. Even though Milioti didn't "understand the weight" of who she'd been cast as in How I Met Your Mother, it's very clear that she does now, and perhaps this will encourage her to do more research into her roles in the future.
