Before How I Met Your Mother came to an end, rumors of a spinoff started to swirl. Viewers were interested in seeing a continuation of the series but from Tracy's point-of-view. Seeing as she was the basis of the series but received so little screentime, fans wanted another chance in getting to know the character even though she met a tragic end in the future timeline. Those behind the spinoff proposal ideas had other ideas but it didn't truly matter since neither of them came to fruition and the time has likely ed for any opportunities in the future.
The first spinoff that went into development was Meg Ryan was also tapped to serve as the narrator, performing the voiceover of Sally.
A year later, CBS ed on the How I Met Your Dad pilot since aspects of it didn't work. The crew behind the spinoff refused to reshoot the pilot episode and instead shopped it to other networks including Netflix. Since other networks didn't jump at the chance, the cast's contract ran out and the project was abandoned. That didn't stop CBS from holding out hope for the future.
In late 2016, over two years after How I Met Your Dad failed, a new version of a spinoff came to fruition. This Is Us. How I Met Your Father was pushed aside before the idea was abandoned. In 2017, a third idea for a How I Met Your Mother spinoff started gaining steam. Alison Bennet was chosen to write and Bays and Thomas jumped onboard but it never got past the early stages of development. It's safe to assume that any potential spinoff is dead in the water at this point.
