In 2024, Abigail's "Rat-Pack," raids Abigail's house with the intention of kidnapping her to get ransom money from her wealthy father. However, due to Abigail's true identity, this plan goes off the rails.
Abigail is not the first movie to ever introduce a young vampire character, however, it is quite an interesting premise, all told. In particular, Abigail stands out because of how the movie presents the young protagonist as sweet and innocent. At first, she is just a little girl returning from ballet practice. When her kidnapping first begins, she is scared and vulnerable. However, the tables turn and Abigail not only shows off her vampire roots, but shows just how dangerous she is, despite her apparent age. Overall, Abigail mixes genres and tropes in a fresh and exciting way.

Abigail Ending: Why Vampire Ballerina Makes That Decision Explained By Melissa Barrera
Abigail star Melissa Barrera explains the horror movie's ending and why the titular ballerina vampire (Alisha Weir) makes one perplexing choice.
Abigail Is Technically 12 Years Old In The 2024 Movie
Alisha Weir is 14
Before Abigail's criminals discover their hostage's true identity, they believe that she is a 12-year-old girl. This is the age that she physically presents herself as, and this is what the public knows of her, as her father is supposedly a massive figure within the criminal underworld. The fact that Abigail does ballet helps bolster this idea of her youth. Really, it is the hinge that her identity rests on. When Abigail appears in the film in her ballet costume, it brings her threat level down several notches. It confirms that she is in fact a young and sweet girl.
Abigail is based on the 1936 movie, Dracula's Daughter.
Though Abigail is firmly 12 years old in Abigail, her actress is actually a bit older. Alisha Weir, who portrays the vampiric Abigail, is 14 years old. Ultimately, this age gap is not particularly surprising, nor does it make much of a difference. Though there are two years between Abigail and Alisha, both girls still exist within an age group that is virtually the same. In of school years, they would both be in middle school. In this way, Alisha Weir is a great choice for portraying Abigail. She successfully plays a sweet little girl and a ravenous vampire.
Abigail Reveals She's Actually Several Centuries Old
Abigail's vampire identity has kept her looking young
Despite the fact that Abigail looks and acts like a 12-year-old girl, and is played by a real 14-year-old, in actuality, she is approximately 1,000 years old.
Although her exact age is never specified, when Abigail reveals to her captors that she is a vampire, it is confirmed that, despite her outward appearance, she has lived for hundreds of years.
Due to her vampire status though, she has remained twelve years old for each of those centuries. It quickly becomes clear that, no matter how Abigail looks, she has the power to violently kill any of her kidnappers.
For context, if Abigail was turned into a vampire 1,000 years ago from 2024, she would have been born in 1012. This is a year that predates the United States, the Bubonic Plague, and Michaelangelo. If Abigail truly lived during such an ancient time, it can be presumed that she was born somewhere in Europe, long before it was the Europe audiences are familiar with today. Following vampire tradition, it's likely she was born near what is known as Transylvania or Romania. Furthermore, it is confirmed that Abigail was turned by her father, Kristof Lazar.
Why Abigail's Father Turned Her Into A Vampire At Such A Young Age
He wanted an eternally young daughter
Though Abigail is full of frights, the movie never delves into Abigail's origins. Presuming that her father turned her into a vampire, it is strange that he decided to turn her when she was 12. In many ways, this puts Abigail at a severe disadvantage for her entire undead life. Though her mind is a thousand years old, she is forever trapped in the body of a minor, who can not drive, get a job, or fall in love. However, as Abigail proves, her age is also a perfect trick when it comes to fooling enemies.
Ultimately, Abigail was likely turned for one of two reasons. First, her father may have simply wanted a weapon as shown in Abigail. Just as Abigail tricks and kills her kidnappers in the movie, her father may have wanted this secret weapon to dispose of his enemies. Another possibility though is that he wanted a daughter who could never grow up. This may have been for sentimental reasons or power reasons. By keeping her 12, he could always control her. Regardless, Abigail offers a glimpse at a very interesting young villain.
