Back to the Future's wacky inventor, Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown, is known for his distinctive style, but it can be difficult to pin down how old actor Christopher Lloyd really was while playing the character. In 1985, Lloyd transformed into Doc by donning a white radiation suit and wild hair to bring time travel to a mainstream audience. Back to the Future was an immediate success, grossing more than any other film in 1985. Back to the Future's enduring is truly impressive, and it became a hit partially thanks to Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown.
In Back to the Future, Doc is an American inventor who successfully transforms a DeLorean DMC-12 sports car into a time machine. Doc is one of the main characters of Back to the Future alongside Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student who is friends with the unconventional scientist. The age gap between Doc and Marty is clear to see, but exactly how old Doc is in Back to the Future, as well as how old his actor, Christopher Lloyd, was during the making of the movie, is hard to tell while watching.

Back To The Future: The Actor Who Almost Played Doc Brown
Before Christopher Lloyd starred as the scientist and partner to Marty McFly, what actor almost played Doc Brown in Back to the Future?
How Old Christopher Lloyd Was In Back To The Future (Compared To Doc Brown)
Christopher Lloyd Was Almost Two Decades Younger Than His Character
Christopher Lloyd was born on October 22, 1938, putting him at 46 years old during the filming of the original Back To The Future in 1984 and 1985. That makes Lloyd significantly younger than Doc, whose age was revealed in the novelizations of the Back to the Future trilogy, which are generally accepted as canon.
The Back to the Future books confirm Doc was born in 1920, meaning he was 65 years old in 1985 when Marty McFly traveled back in time, though only 35 during the past scenes set in 1955. To make Lloyd look older for the present-day scenes, the Back to the Future costume and makeup team based Doc's mad scientist look off of Albert Einstein and Leopold Stokowski. Lloyd also hunched his posture to appear shorter.

Lloyd's most recent links to the franchise include Expedition: Back to the Future, a 2021 series where he searches for the original DeLorean from the Back to the Future trilogy for The Michael J. Fox Foundation, and promotions for Rick and Morty, where he portrays Rick Sanchez, an animated character inspired by Doc Brown.

Other Movies Where Actors Played Much Older Characters
Hollywood Is Full Of Examples Of Actors Taking On Characters Much Older Than Them
Many Back to the Future fans are surprised to learn just how wide the age gap is between Doc Brown and Christopher Lloyd. However, Christopher Lloyd isn't the only actor to play a character older than them, and while cast lists more commonly include cast portraying younger characters, the same is also true in reverse. Most interestingly, it's more often female actors who play older characters, with several key examples standing out.
While the age gap between Christopher Lloyd and Doc Brown in Back to the Future is one of the widest, it's far from the only time an actor has taken on an older character.
Jennifer Lawrence started her career playing much older characters. For example, in the 2015 dramedy Joy, directed by David. O Russell, Lawrence played the titular Joy Mangano. The character of Joy is a 34-year-old housewife-turned-inventor. However, Jennifer Lawrence was only in her early 20s when the movie was being filmed, having recently turned 25 at the time Joy was released. This wasn't the first time the director cast Jennifer Lawrence as a much older character either, as in 2012's The Silver Linings Playbook David O. Russell cast Lawrence as the widow Tiffany Maxwell, who was presumably in her late 20s to early 30s.
It's not only young actresses who land roles as much older characters. Cher appeared in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again as Ruby Sheridan, the mother of Meryl Streep's character Donna. While Cher was fantastic in the role, she was 72 at the time, only 3 years older than Meryl Streep at 69. Given that Streep's character roughly matched her age, it's implied that Ruby should be in her late 80s at least, possibly even her early 90s.
Another interesting example came in the 2004 comedy Mean Girls. In Mean Girls, Rachel McAdams famously played high school junior Regina George, though the actress was in her 20s. However, Amy Poehler also took on a role with a significant age gap when she played Regina George's mom. Poehler was a mere 33 years old in Mean Girls, an incredibly young age for the mother of a high school junior (and only 7 years older than McAdams). While the age gap between Christopher Lloyd and Doc Brown in Back to the Future is one of the widest, it's far from the only time an actor has taken on an older character.
