Critics may not have enjoyed Season 5 of How to Get Away With Murder as much as the previous ones, but that didn't stop its fans from loving it to the heavens and back. The story follows the events that occur after Annalise's massive win at the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, Bonnie's attempt to find love is rudely cut short when Ronald Miller is savagely beaten by Nate — who firmly believes the DA's guilt in Lahey, Sr.'s shooting.
The governor of Pennsylvania, Lynne Birkhead, offers an olive branch to Annalise (which morphs into a venomous snake almost immediately.) Laurel, unable to protect her child from the swirling mess of death and misery, vanishes along with Christophe. Have a look at the ten episodes in this season that viewers have rated as the best.
Your Funeral (Episode 1) - 8.4
By their third year at law school, Connor, Laurel, Asher and Michaela are almost entirely out of it, but Annalise is back in the game stronger than ever. Her Supreme Court victory nets her a plethora of job offers, but she chooses to work at Caplan & Gold alongside Tegan Price.
Bonnie tries to learn how much the Acting DA, Ronald Miller, really knows about them (given that the deceased Denver might have kept him in the loop.) Meanwhile, Nate stalks Bonnie's alleged child, whom she had believed to have been dead the whole time.
The Baby Was Never Dead (Episode 3) - 8.4
Asher accidentally spills his prior relationship with Bonnie in front of Miller, whom he is also working for. Governor Birkhead is determined to put a stop to Annalise's ceaseless class-actions, and makes it more difficult by having her class undergo an ethics exam before they are allowed to work with the professor.
Frank discovers that Gabriel isn't who he says he is, after finding a false ID in his possession. Nate thinks that Bonnie stole her own baby from the hospital, but Annalise corrects him, saying that the woman in the grainy image from decades ago is actually Bonnie's younger sister.
We Know Everything (Episode 12) - 8.6
Gabriel Maddox is ensnared by the FBI, who plant evidence against Gabriel, leading to the poor kid being charged under domestic terrorism. Annalise only learns of this fact through a recording from the camera that Frank had hidden in Gabriel's room.
For some reason, he finds the invasion of his privacy upsetting, even though it secures his release. Nate and Bonnie are desperate to prove (to themselves) that ADA Miller was guilty, which is how they discover that he was aware of her plans to adopt Wes after his mother had committed suicide.
I Got Played (Episode 7) - 8.6
Annalise is certain that the Governor has no plans of collaborating with her, the confirmation of which comes when she is told that the Pennsylvania Fair Defense Project has been indefinitely shelved.
Oliver and Connor begin planning their wedding, but the jubilant atmosphere is besmirched when a homophobic erby spews hatred at the kissing couple. Frank and Laurel, who are snooping all around Gabriel, discover him having sex with Michaela. Bonnie is not pleased in the slightest when she learns what they have been doing.
Where Are Your Parents? (Episode 13) - 8.7
During Annalise's Christmas Eve dinner party, she gets a call from FBI Agent, Claire Telesco, who implies an immunity deal for every crime in exchange for her testimony. Bonnie meets with Miller's mother against Nate's urging, and is left burdened with guilt after the sweet old lady requests her to bring her child's killer to justice.
Telesco impounds Oliver's laptop, whose various protections are powerful, but not strong enough to stop the FBI from breaking through. Governor Birkhead plays a dangerous game when she shifts the blame of Nate Lahey, Sr.'s murder onto Emmett Crawford, a managing partner at Caplan & Gold.
We Can Find Him (Episode 6) - 8.7
Initially, Annalise trusted that the Governor had no evil intentions at heart, considering her openness at establishing a project to aid unfairly punished victims of the law.
However, she expects Annalise to quit working at C&G and work on the new project full-time. She agrees to this condition, but then Nate Lahey, Sr. is murdered right before he takes his first step as a free man. Bonnie is extremely upset when her sister, Julie, reveals that she buried the former's baby in the woods to stop it from crying.
It Was The Worst Day Of My Life (Episode 5) - 8.8
During her class, Annalise expects all her students to analyze everything that went awry with Lahey, Sr.'s trial — an indirect way to pinpoint inaccuracies in her own approach by using free student labor.
Bonnie comes clean to Miller about her traumatic past, and he merely tells her that she is all the more exquisite for surviving and thriving after what she experienced. The flashforward depicts Oliver and Connor's wedding night, in which Connor notices his mother and Asher whispering to each other in the foreground.
Make Me The Enemy (Episode 14) - 9.0
Tegan and Annalise try to uncover the relationship between Nate Lahey, Sr.'s death and Emmett Crawford, so Annalise agrees to take him out for dinner (if only to keep him under close observation.) However, they learn that the man actually involved is Xavier Castillo, Laurel's megalomaniac big brother.
Laurel is frantic about her mother's disappearance, and goes to the FBI to get more information on the unknown number that's been calling her. When Oliver retrieves his PC from the FBI, one of his hidden softwares shows an image — a whiteboard investigation with the name "Operation Bonfire", proving that they are in serious trouble.
I Want To Love You Until The Day I Die (Episode 8) - 9.2
This episode is one of the most emotional ones, for instance, Nate's rage at losing his father causes him to violently beat ADA Miller right next to Connor and Oliver's wedding venue. Upon discovering the act, Bonnie smothers the man she loved (trusting Nate's anger over Miller's feeble responses.)
Another twist comes in the form of Gabriel Maddox: Frank discovers that he's actually the son of Sam Keating, but Annalise just slaps him in the face when he tells her. Gabriel himself corroborates the story, however, by breaking into her apartment and revealing his identity directly.
Please Say No One Else Is Dead (Episode 15) - 9.3
Emmett Crawford is arrested under false pretenses, but Annalise thankfully gets him out (unfortunately, he is later poisoned to death.) Frank struggles to find out if Ronald Miller really had something to do with the crime he was murdered for, and he, unfortunately, succeeds: learning that Xavier Castillo and the Governor together handled the hit on Lahey, Sr.
Annalise swears him to secrecy, saying that Nate and Bonnie can never know that they had killed a man not only innocent but one who actively tried to protect the old man by shifting his transfer timings.
