An awesome new piece of Howard the Duck celebrates his 50th anniversary, an epic new cosplay celebrates one of Marvel’s most unique characters.

Howard the Duck Isn't Meant to Look Human

The Howard the Duck cosplay was shared by cartoon animals like Ziggy Pig and Silly Seal, which were an ultra-popular staple of comics before the rise of superheroes (indeed, his original design was changed by Marvel after complaints by Disney.)

Howard the Duck Isn't Meant to Fit In

Unfortunately, the MCU's various designs for Howard tend to ignore this origin, moving the character more in-line with the world around him. This is contrary to Howard's nature, as the point of the character is to be someone who is immediately and obviously out of place. Quinones and Zdarsky’s modern take nails the other-dimensional being while also conveying the world-weariness of a character at-odds with the world that surrounds them. Howard the Duck comics tend to be more explicitly political than Marvel's superhero stories, as his disaffected, rage-against-the-machine attitude contrasts with being a pint-sized cartoon animal whose catchphrase is an enraged squawk of "WAUGH!"

Howard the Duck Turns 50!

Howard's adventures in the 1970s broke new ground, stretching the limits of what mainstream comics could do. Fans of the character won't find much of that in the MCU, but the Howard the Duck one-shot promises an irreverent look back at his 50-year comic career that shouldn't be missed, with Quinones and Zdarsky back at the wheel along with a host of comic talent.

Howard the Duck #1 is coming from Marvel Comics November 29.
