The Pocket S and Galaxy Z Flip 4, respectively.
The have an IPX8 water resistance rating. The Huawei Mate X3 has a 6.4-inch 120Hz OLED cover display with FHD+ resolution, while the inner screen is a 7.85-inch 120Hz 2,496 × 2,224 . On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a 6.2-inch 120Hz 904 × 2,316 Dynamic AMOLED 2X cover display and a 7.6-inch 120Hz 2,176 × 1,812 Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display.
Processor, Cameras, & Battery
Both smartphones are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, although the one in the Huawei Mate X3 is called the Snapdragon 8+ 4G as it has a 4G modem. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 has 12GB of RAM and is available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage variants. Huawei hasn't specified the RAM for the Mate X3, but it can be purchased in the same storage variants as Samsung's foldable. The Mate X3 also has a storage expansion slot, but it's only compatible with Huawei's proprietary nano memory cards.
The Mate X3's primary rear camera is a 50MP f/1.8 OIS sensor, paired with a 13MP ultra-wide camera that can also shoot 2.5cm macro images, and a 12MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS, 5x optical zoom, and 50x digital zoom. Both front-facing cameras are 8MP sensors. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 also has a 50MP f/1.8 primary rear camera, but its ultra-wide camera is a 12MP sensor. It also has a 10MP telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom. The cover display is home to a 10MP sensor while the inner display houses a 4MP under-display sensor.
The Mate X3 has a 4,800mAh battery that's bigger than the 4,400mAh battery of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Huawei's foldable s 66W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold offers 25W wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. Not only does Samsung's phone charge much slower, but it also doesn't come with a charger in the box, unlike the Huawei Mate X3.
Software, Connectivity, & Price
The Mate X3 runs Harmony OS 3.1 (without Google Mobile Services) which is Huawei's custom operating system for its smartphones and tablets. The company hasn't specified how long it will provide software updates for the phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 launched with Android 12L and has since been updated to One UI 5.1 based on Android 13. Like other Samsung flagships, it will receive four OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
Both foldables have stereo speakers but no headphone jack. They also have Bluetooth 5.2, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, Wi-Fi 6 (Wi-Fi 6E for the Galaxy Z Fold 4), and dual SIM. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 s the S Pen, but the stylus has to be purchased separately. There is no mention of stylus for the Mate X3, which is disappointing considering the Mate Xs 2 has the feature.
The Huawei Mate X3 starts at ¥12,999 (~$1,892) in China for the base model with 256GB of storage. That's a bit higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 4 which starts at $1,799 for the 256GB base model. The Mate X3 has bigger and sharper displays, a larger battery with faster charging, and ships with a charger in the box. However, its lack of 5G and stylus puts it at a disadvantage. Huawei has confirmed that the Mate X3, alongside the new P60 series, will be launched globally in May 2023. Unfortunately, the Huawei Mate X3 is unlikely to be sold in the U.S., which leaves the Galaxy Z Fold 4 as the default choice for a large-screen foldable in the country.
