MWC 2022 has already kicked off to a great start with several new and exciting products, one of which is the more than an Amazon Kindle rival. The Kindle lineup is one of the most popular when it comes to e-readers, but lately, several Chinese smartphone manufacturers have begun entering this space. Xiaomi already has a few e-readers in its portfolio, but they are only officially sold in its home country of China.

Huawei has been making tablets for years, first under the MediaPad name, and now under MatePad. While its tablets span multiple price points, the flagship models are known to pack impressive specifications and features, with some going toe to toe with Apple's iPads and Samsung's Galaxy Tab S series. Now, the brand is taking a big step into e-reader territory.

The Huawei MatePad Paper is a 10.3-inch e-reader

Huawei MatePad Paper is more than just a Kindle Oasis rival as it packs features that Amazon's e-reader can only dream of. The display is pretty massive at 10.3-inches with 1872 × 1404 pixels resolution (227 PPI). Huawei says the large screen allows for more content to be displayed at a time, thus reducing the frequency of flipping pages. It also claims that it has a smart refresh rate that automatically adjusts based on the content being viewed. Powering the device is a hexa-core processor along with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of non-expandable storage, which is double the 32GB of storage available on the Kindle Oasis. Huawei says content can be accessed from its AppGallery as well as from third-party services.

Apart from being an e-reader, the MatePad Paper can also double up as a note-taking device that provides a paper-like writing experience thanks to stylus . To be specific, it s the Huawei M-Pencil (2nd generation) that launched alongside the 2021 MatePad tablets. The stylus also works with the Mate 40 Pro/Pro+ smartphones. With the stylus, owners can annotate and highlight documents, and even take notes in a separate app (split-screen view) while reading from another app. There are a handful of templates for the notes app, as well as the ability to encrypt notes and unlock them with the fingerprint scanner built into the power button. It also has audio recording, thanks to four microphones, with the ability to add written notes to recordings and also convert handwritten notes to text.

Other features of Huawei's e-reader include a built-in calendar, translator, 32-level backlight, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6+, stereo speakers, and a 3,625mAh battery with for 22.5W fast charging. Huawei says it will last up to 28 days in standby mode and that a 1.5-hour charge will provide 6 days of use (reading mode). It also s reverse charging via OTG and wireless screen projection. The Huawei MatePad Paper will sell for €499 (~$556) and will ship with a stylus, charger, and a folio cover in the box. Buyers will be able to pick it up in Black, Khaki, and Blue.
