Why Has It Been Complicated For Marvel Studios To Make A Hulk Movie?

For the longest time, the biggest hurdle that prevented Marvel Studios from producing a film around Ruffalo's character was the complicated Hulk movie rights. While the distribution rights were with Universal since 2008's The Incredible Hulk, those have now reportedly reverted back to Marvel Studios as of June 2023. However, the Hulk movie rights are clearly not the main issue at large when it comes to Marvel Studios not wanting to make another film around the iconic Avenger.
The Incredible Hulk, released nearly two decades ago, grossed $265 million on a $137 million budget, and it became one of the weaker entries in the MCU. It also didn't help that it was received with mixed reviews, as The Incredible Hulk didn't help build a stronger interest with general audience . That would explain why Marvel Studios puts Hulk in various MCU movies and shows when giving him his own storylines, as this avoided having to produce a traditional solo film around him.

Several Hulk characters are returning for Captain America: Brave New World in 2025.

Even though things could change in the future, with more new heroes and stories than ever, the chances of Marvel Studios deciding to produce a Hulk movie aren't especially likely. At this point, even if such a movie were to be in the works, it wouldn't be shocking if it didn't appear until after The Multiverse Saga, especially if the MCU is getting ready for a soft reboot. But until a Hulk movie happens, the MCU audience can relive all of his adventures in past movies and TV shows through Blu-Ray/DVD and on Disney+.
