In Marvel Comics, the Hulk and Wolverine are brutal heroes who have a hard time reining in their more savage and monstrous sides, with both having extreme anger issues that (mostly) help more than hurt while fighting in the field. Crossing paths and exchanging blows more than once on the page, one Hulk vs Wolverine battle, in particular, revealed a way Hulk could reliably damage adamantium — and it’s not for the faint of heart.

Famously duking it out with Wolverine in Logan’s comic debut in 1974’s Incredible Hulk #180-181, by Len Wein and Herb Trimpe, Hulk and Wolverine have a long history of beating the tar out of one another, with Hulk’s brawn, Wolverine’s claws, and their similar healing factors always ensuring a brawl for the ages.

Hulk fights Thing and Wolverine and uses his claws to stab Wolverine in the head

In 2012’s Hulk #12, the Jade Giant finds himself once again on the receiving end of Wolverine’s brutality. But in a twist, Hulk uses Wolverine’s own claws to stab Logan through the skull, with Hulk’s power being strong enough to pierce the adamantium skeleton within.

Wolverien jumping into battle with Hulk with holes in his head

Dealing with a version of Bruce Banner living inside Hulk's head who wants nothing more than to trap him for a “larger plan,” it isn’t long before Hulk crosses paths with The Thing and Wolverine, with the pair coming together to tame Hulk before his destructive rampage gets worse. Grabbing Logan by the arm at the outset of the battle, Hulk uses his immense strength to turn Wolverine’s attack against him, forcibly shoving Logan’s claws directly into his forehead, puncturing his adamantium-coated skull and doing some real damage to Wolverine in a way that a simple overpowered punch couldn’t do.

Illustrated in an oddly specific close-up next, the holes in Wolverine’s head clearly show that part of his metal skull has ruptured, proving that all it takes for Hulk to destroy adamantium is a violent push with a pointed piece of it. Though technically not damaging Wolverine’s adamantium-laced bones solely via brute force, Hulk having enough strength to, quite literally, shove Wolverine’s signature weapon through his reinforced body is an inventive way for Hulk to fight this notoriously hard to defeat member of the X-Men while simultaneously adding a layer of brutality to the fight in a very Hulk-like way.

Hulk Can Damage Adamantium if He Has Some of the Metal Handy To Use as a Weapon

Wolverine vs Hulk in Marvel Comics' Incredible Hulk 181 1974

While it’s unreasonable to assume Hulk would have scraps of sharpened adamantium readily available to replicate his success damaging Wolverine’s fortified body as seen here, it’s also proven in official Marvel continuity that Hulk is capable of cracking, bending, and even breaking adamantium with his bare hands, with the addition of an adamantium weapon only helping Hulk to effectively and efficiently combat any enemy sheathed in the stuff. Hulk’s strength alone is an invaluable asset for the character, and when used in tandem with some kind of adamantium-tinged tool, it’s more than enough to take down any threat, Wolverine included.
