This recent quirky period piece from Nicholas Hoult) and move to Russia from , but she immediately regrets her decision when she sees how truly cruel Peter is.
To save her life while also not accepting defeat, Catherine enlists others as she begins to scheme to become Empress of Russia and get rid of Peter. The royal events are outrageous throughout the mini-series from raging parties to live bears and the characters are just as outrageous as the events. Here are some of the characters fans like and some characters fans hate.
Like: Catherine
Catherine is the main character of the mini-series and although she makes mistakes throughout the series and also shows her ignorance she's an enjoyable main character who the fans continue to root for throughout.
She finds herself in a terrible situation and instead of accepting it she is constantly fighting and scheming to make Russia and her world a better place. She's a strong and empathetic character who is able to charm just about anyone.
Hate: Peter
Peter is the quintessential villain of the Hulu series as he has little to no redeeming qualities about him. He's cruel and malicious and will ruin anyone who crosses him.
He only wants to be told he's liked and will hurt or kill anyone who doesn't agree with him. He has one or two moments where the audience could feel for him, but it's nowhere near enough to balance out his horrendous moments.
Like: Marial
Marial is Catherine's personal servant and quickly becomes her closest friend and confidant. Marial helps Catherine realize that she has to play the Russian politics game and appease Peter, but she can also scheme against him in secret.
Marial s Catherine and Orlo and s Catherine's plan to become Empress of Russia. She's funny, honest, and ive to her friend.
Hate: Archbishop
The Archbishop, referred to as Archie throughout the show, surprisingly isn't the worst character on the show and actually shows a lot of kindness to Marial.
But, he also put Catherine through an unnecessary and evasive check-up when she first arrived in Russia. It's unclear whether he truly believes in God and his work or if it's for political gain, but either way, he isn't a very likeable character.
Like: Leo
Peter brings Leo into their royal lives as a gift to Catherine because Peter has already taken on Georgina as a lover and thinks Catherine will be happier with a lover.
Although hesitant at first, Catherine begins to truly fall for Leo and Leo seems to fall for her as well. They're a good pair and it's nice to see Catherine be able to fully and intimately confide in someone.
Hate: Velementov
Velementov is the leader of the Russian army in the comedic period drama and while pretty successful in that field, he is also a major creep.
When Catherine arrives in Russia, Velementov is immediately enamored with her and doesn't try to control himself at all around her. Everyone knows of his obsession and at one point he drunkenly tries to force himself on Catherine.
Like: Aunt Elizabeth
Aunt Elizabeth is a caring and hilarious character that seems to have figured out the secret to surviving and even thriving in their environment in the comedic period drama.
She lives her life the way she wants to under the guise of everyone leaving her alone because they believe she's crazy, but she's actually quite observant and lovely. She has empathy for everyone in Russia from Catherine to Peter and always does what she thinks is right.
Hate: Grigor
Although Grigor is constantly going back and forth and grappling with his love and hatred for Peter, he still goes along with him most of the time even if it is to protect himself and his wife.
Peter sleeps with Grigor's wife, Georgina, constantly and it obviously bothers Grigor though Peter doesn't see it. Though Grigor does try to get back at Peter in secret, and he's nowhere near the worst character in the serious, it's a spur of the moment short-term plan that doesn't work and he'd be better off playing the long game against him.
Like: Orlo
Orlo, played by Sacha Dhawan, is a quiet and well-mannered advisor to Peter. He knows how insane Peter is and how much Russia can and should change for the better, but he's too afraid on his own to take a stand.
When Catherine arrives in Russia, they quickly become friends and begin putting a plan in motion that will hopefully see Catherine ruling Russia with Orlo at her side.
Hate: Georgina
Georgina has the same issues that her husband Grigor has as she's also caught up in Peter's insane world and cannot refuse him as a lover.
She's nowhere near the worst character of the series and her interest in Peter, although not clear, is more likely due to her feeling like she has to connect to her forced lover. Her intentions are sometimes unclear and although she seems to genuinely care about her husband Grigor, she also doesn't reassure him very much.
