Warning: SPOILERS for Dark Web Finale #1

The Marvel Universe insults the not the island of Krakoa. The mutant island nation has dominated past few years of X-Men stories, but the human world has yet to unanimously recognize the independent sovereign country. Now in Dark Web Finale #1, humanity reveals their true feelings toward mutants: in their eyes, mutants warrant less sympathy than demons from Limbo.

The Dark Web event has descended upon Manhattan, transforming inanimate objects into sentient murderous machines who attempt to eat civilians. Thanks to the machinations of Chasm (Spider-Man's evil clone), and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey's clone), the otherworldly realm of Limbo threatens to unleash a demon army upon the human world. Spider-Man and the X-Men launch a desperate attack to stop the clone duo, but the battle cannot be won without a sacrifice: a legal one.

In Dark Web Finale #1, written by Zeb Wells with art by Adam Kuburt & sco Mortarino with Scott Hanna, Spider-Man and the X-Men journey into Limbo to defeat Chasm, now in his monstrous "King Chasm" form. Once defeated, Ben Reilly is imprisoned in Limbo while Madelyne Pryor has freedom of sorts: Grey's clone navigated her way to New York legally recognizing her domain of Limbo. The end of the Dark Web event shows the hellish tower standing high as a new addition to the Manhattan skyline...all while the mutant population of Earth still struggles to be recognized.

Marvel's Limbo Is Officially Recognized As Mutants Still Experience Bigotry

The embassy to Limbo in the Marvel Universe

Despite the X-Men's best efforts, some countries still refuse to recognize the existence of Krakoa. Surprisingly, the UK is one of those countries (thanks to Merlin and Captain Britain), along with a handful of others. The fact that Limbo was granted an official embassy mere days after a demonic invasion shows just how little humanity cares about granting rights to mutants and accepting the existence of a mutant nation. While Madelyne did imply a veiled threat if the UN didn't recognize Limbo, Krakoa has an army of super-powerful mutants (essentially ruling out the need for a standing army) and humanity still has difficulty recognizing the nation.

Note that Professor Xavier even granted the nations of the world advanced medical technology, derived from Krakoan science, in exchange for the recognition from the human community. Unfortunately, the events of Dark Web proves Professor X should have used force to attain his dream of coexistence. The X-Men now must contend with the fact that humans accepted Limbo with relative ease, but the battle for mutant rights rages on.
