After the release of season 2, there is speculation that more short adventures for Groot in the MCU will be produced in I Am Groot season 3. I Am Groot first premiered on August 10, 2022, as a series of standalone shorts focusing on the then-smallest member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Is I Am Groot MCU Canon?

The matter of I Am Groot's canonicity to the wider MCU has been disputed among fans and the higher-ups at Marvel Studios for some time. Even Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn revealed he doesn't think I Am Groot is canon to his MCU projects, similarly to how the Team Thor One-Shots weren't canon to Thor: Ragnarok. Even so, the series of shorts seems to fit perfectly into the tiny window of time that Marvel Studios has dedicated to it (between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and one of the film's post-credits scenes), so it's very possible the series is canon to the MCU.

Is I Am Groot Season 3 Happening?

Currently, there has been no confirmation from Marvel Studios about a third season of I Am Groot. However, I Am Groot creator Kristin Leopore revealed that 30 different storylines were presented to Marvel Studios for each season, so there's no shortage of ideas if more shorts were to be produced. It seems the production of these short adventures may be quick and painless for Marvel Studios, so it's highly likely further adventures with Groot will be produced in the MCU's future.

If I Am Groot season 3 is developed for the MCU's future, there's no doubt that Vin Diesel will be returning to voice his now-iconic character. Diesel debuted as the voice of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, and has done a fantastic job at delivering the words "I am Groot" with so much emotion and creativity. Bradley Cooper reprised his role of Rocket in season 1, and Jeffrey Wright returned as What If...?'s Watcher in I Am Groot season 2, establishing a clear connection to the MCU. It's possible that these voice actors could return in I Am Groot season 3, along with other Guardians of the Galaxy.

I Am Groot Season 3 Story: What Could The New Shorts Be About?

I Am Groot's stories seem to be wholly unpredictable, with the young Guardian of the Galaxy getting into some outlandish and fantastical situations that no average audience member could predict. Even so, it's possible that I Am Groot season 3 could act as a departure from the previous seasons by focusing on a slightly older version of Groot. I Am Groot season 1 premiered in August 2022, and season 2 hit Disney+ in September 2023, so it's possible that I Am Groot could become an annual series. If this is the case, I Am Groot season 3 would premiere in the Fall of 2024 on Disney+, though it's unclear whether the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes will prohibit work being produced on the series' script, and the involvement of the show's voice cast. It would be a good choice for Marvel Studios to make Groot's escapades a consistent fixture, particularly since I Am Groot may be the only new Guardians of the Galaxy content audiences see for a while.
