The new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is following the style of legacy sequels by bringing back old characters and introducing new ones.

By combining new and old cast , I Know What You Did Last Summer is very much copying the strategy from another slasher reboot, 2022's Scream. It makes sense since the strategy worked, but also because both slasher franchises were created by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream movies. It's not just characters, though, as the sequel is returning to the same setting, the seaside town of Southport, North Carolina, and bringing back much of the same iconography, including the iconic hook-wielding killer.

Our Take On The I Know What You Did Last Summer Image

Can Its New Cast Truly Set Itself Apart?

While the sequel will introduce new cast , it's unclear if it can truly set itself apart from the original movie. The reboot follows a new crop of teenagers who cover up a fatal car accident and are hunted by a hook-wielding killer, the same exact story as the original movie, which was already considered a formulaic slasher that felt a decade behind its time in 1997. While the new cast may seem like a shiny new coating, it remains to be seen if the I Know What You Did Last Summer truly has anything new to offer.

I Know What You Did Last Summer releases on July 18.
