Everything the Trailer Has Revealed About IF

Ryan Reynolds Looking Shocked in IF

The trailer offers a great deal of insight into the story and tone of IF. This includes the fact that the acronym in the title is the official term used to describe imaginary friends and is indeed pronounced like "if." As Reynolds and Fleming embark on their journey, it seems that they also encounter a variety of strange Mary Poppins-esque worlds as they find themselves opening up to experience more joy and wonder in their lives.

It's also clear that Reynolds is bringing the same sardonic charm that has propelled him to superstardom through movies including Deadpool, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, and Red Notice. This provides an important counterpoint to the imaginary friends, who have a much broader, gentler, and goofier comic sensibility since they were born from children's imaginations. It's not yet entirely clear what his character's relationship to Fleming's character is, but his character does specifically say he lived alone at the beginning of the movie, which indicates the character's arc toward softness and kindness that lies ahead of him.

Every Ryan Reynolds Movie Ranked From Worst to Best

Best known for his work as Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds is one of the most popular stars out there, and here's how all his movies rank, worst to best.

Overall, it seems that IF brings Krasinski back to the realm of pure comedy (as opposed to dramedy), something that he hasn't done as a director since he helmed three The Office episodes between 2010 and 2012. While he's held voice roles in recent animated comedies, this will also be his first live-action role in a comedy since The Office ended in 2013. Given this belated return to the genre, however different the movie may be from the workplace sitcom, it makes perfect sense that he would be re-teaming with his Office co-star Steve Carell as a victory lap.
