Lestat & Rowan’s Immortal Universe Crossover Can Still Happen (Despite Their Book Endgames)

Lestat De Lioncourt And Rowan Mayfair May Meet

In one of Anne Rice's more contentious moves, she paired The Vampire Chronicles' main character, Lestat, with Lives of the Mayfair Witches' main character, Rowan. This will sound odd to viewers of the shows who haven't read the books. Rowan in Mayfair Witches season 1 was enjoying her fraught relationship with Ciprien Grieves, whereas Interview with the Vampire season 2 left Lestat only just starting to make amends with his on/off lover, Louis. In the books, these relationships are endgames - Ciprien replacing a character called Michael notwithstanding. There doesn't seem like much space for Rowan and Lestat to get together.

Mayfair Witches season 2 will be released in 2025, as confirmed at SDCC.

Despite this, the two characters hit it off in one of the books in The Vampire Chronicles nearer to the end of the series. Neither TV show has yet got anywhere close to this point in their storyline, so there's still a very real chance that Lestat and Rowan could be heading for a crossover romance in either show or both. Adding to this possibility is the fleeting glimpse of vampires in the Mayfair Witches season 2 trailer, one of whom appears to be Felix from Interview with the Vampire.

Lestat Is Polyamorous So Rowan Could be A Fling

An Affair With Rowan Won't Get In Louis' Way

The characters of The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches don't seem to have the same monogamy norm that is prevalent outside of Anne Rice novels, so Rowan's involvement with Lestat doesn't need to spell the end for Lestat and Louis. Mayfair Witches' original character Ciprien is fine but forgettable, so the future that he may share with Rowan doesn't feel like a high-stakes situation worth worrying about.

Alexandra Daddario herself commented at the SDCC that she is "down for vampires."

It could make for a fun, suspense-heavy episode in either show for Lestat and Rowan to enjoy a steamy diversion in each other's arms. This would work best as a set piece and one-off whereby the two characters were used as a foil for each other's respective paramours. After all, no one expects any relationship involving Lestat or Rowan to be smooth sailing. Alexandra Daddario herself commented at the SDCC that she is "down for vampires" when asked about the crossover romance possibility, without disclosing any confirmed plans.

Rowan Is No Match For Lestat In Immortal Universe

Mayfair Witches Needs To Up Its Game

The elephant in the room of this crossover is that Interview with the Vampire is amazing, and Mayfair Witches is just not quite that. Mayfair Witches is fun, enjoyable, and es the time, but it's not changing the game, breaking new ground, or doing something important in TV, like its predecessor. Interview with the Vampire set the bar unfortunately high for Mayfair Witches. Against Sam Reid's Lestat, Rowan never stood a chance.

Daddario ticks certain boxes, but book Rowan was "boyish," with short, white-blonde hair and a "husky" voice - that sounds like at least a start in of a match for Lestat, if not an end. Not because adaptations should be faithful, and nothing else, but because this Rowan broke the mold inside and out. She was brave and unique, whereas the show sanitized her into a conventionally good-looking, standard sexy witch. Interview with the Vampire worked so well because it made its characters even more radical than they were in the books, not less. Anne Rice would have approved.

It didn't help that Rowan suffered from some questionable writing in the show, drifting into a gratuitous, incestuous sex dream and showing no restraint around Lasher whatsoever, with none of the intriguing explanations that the books provided for these valid moments. There's great source material for Mayfair Witches to adapt and AMC+ clearly have it in them to make bold moves, so a brief Rowan-Lestat moment could work if Mayfair Witches can take notes from Interview with the Vampire. But even then, Rowan and Lestat need to stand well clear of each other's endgames.
