Indiana Jones undeniably ranks among Harrison Ford’s best and most iconic characters of all time, but there's been speculation that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be the final time he adopts the role on the big screen. The actor has been playing Jones since the release of Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, which kick-started the franchise and made it into the commercial success that it still is today. Ford has returned to the role several times throughout his career, following up the original trilogy with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008.

Luckily, Ford has no shortage of exciting roles lined up following Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In more recent years, Ford has been focusing on big-budget franchise projects such as the Star Wars sequels and Blade Runner 2049 - and there’s never any shortage of blockbusters for the actor to get involved in. Additionally, Ford has also taken on several television roles that he’ll be returning to over the coming years, ranging across multiple genres and displaying his comedic talents alongside his regular dramatic acting. Thankfully, Ford has several interesting projects lined up for the future and The Dial of Destiny won’t be his final outing as an actor.

Dial Of Destiny Is Harrison Ford's Final Indiana Jones Movie

Despite initial confusion about whether this movie would truly end the Indiana Jones franchise, Ford has officially confirmed that The Dial of Destiny is the final Indiana Jones movie. He won’t be reprising this iconic role ever again, which is hugely sad news for those many fans of the franchise, but thankfully gives a definitive conclusion to the saga instead of leaving everything open-ended. James Mangold’s movie is designed to be an emotional farewell to Indy, firmly shutting the door on any future adventures and putting an end to the idea that Ford will return to the character in the future.

While the actor has confirmed that he won’t be playing the beloved character again, it remains possible that the Indiana Jones franchise could continue without Harrison Ford. There are plenty of young characters and existing storylines that could feasibly carry this series into the future for a new generation, using Ford’s final outing as a propellor into a new age of Indiana Jones. The Indiana Jones movies have been once-in-a-lifetime successes, both critically and commercially, so it’s hard to imagine that Disney will neglect to capitalize on their success and keep using the name to draw in new audiences.

Following his departure as Indiana Jones, Ford will be making the transition into another of Hollywood’s most successful franchises right now - the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’ll be taking over the role of Thaddeus Ross. The character was previously played by William Hurt in movies such as The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: Civil War and is set to have a much larger role in the future of the series. Ford's first appearance as General Ross will be in the Captain America: Brave New World, which will see Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson on his first adventures as the new Captain America.

Thaddeus Ross is an important figure in the MCU, often serving as a liaison between the Avengers and the White House. He’s frequently campaigned to keep the country’s superheroes in check, fighting alongside Tony Stark in favor of the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War. Ford will likely put a new spin on the character, but his signature cynicism and mistrust are unlikely to fade. Given the character’s history in the comics, many fans are already speculating that Brave New World will see Thaddeus Ross transform into the Red Hulk - a superpowered creature with the same superhuman strength as Bruce Banner’s alter-ego.

Harrison Ford Will Return For Shrinking Season 2

On television, Ford will be returning for a second season of Apple TV+’s heartfelt comedy series Shrinking alongside Jason Segel. The show follows Segel’s character, a therapist named Jimmy, as he navigates the fallout of his wife’s death and uses his career as an outlet to release his pain and help other people. Ford plays another therapist named Paul, who’s often unsympathetic to Jimmy’s struggles and just wants him to become the person he once was. The show was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, with many critics praising its ability to juggle tragedy and comedy so effectively (via IMDb).

Shrinking will be returning for a second season in the near future, with the main cast all reprising their roles and continuing these characters’ journeys through grief, mourning, and the everyday struggles of life. Ford brought a much-needed sense of charm and charisma to the character of Paul, lighting up the series and injecting life into every scene that he appeared in. The project is much more low-key and lighthearted than most of Ford’s work, but it’s a great career move that makes the most of his beloved personality without forcing him into all the stunts and action scenes that are required for something like Indiana Jones.

Ford will also be making a comeback for the second season of 1923 on Paramount Plus, an American Western series that tells the story of the Dutton family as they’re forced to grapple with social and economic struggles such as Prohibition and the Great Depression. The show is the third installment in Paramount’s Yellowstone franchise, serving as a prequel to the original series and an immediate sequel to 1883, both of which follow the Duttons throughout different periods of American history. All three projects have been massive successes on the streaming service, with Ford’s character undeniably being the standout of 1923.

Not too much is known about the story of 1923’s second season, but Ford will be reprising the role of Jacob Dutton, with the show’s other central actors including Helen Mirren, Brandon Sklenar, and Julia Schlaepfer. 1923 is another dramatic project for Harrison Ford to sink his teeth into, proving that he’s not lost any of his acting talents in the several decades since he began his career.
