Comic book adaptations have become increasingly proliferate over the past several years, and as much as the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Comics film franchise continue to soar in popularity, there is also currently a boom period for indie comic adaptations, from publishers such as Image Comics, BOOM! Studios, Dark Horse, and more. These ten comics provide the source material for movies and TV shows.

Comics have influenced film and television for decades. The MCU is still going on after over 15 years, with the most recent film being Superman recently released a new trailer, which has some major reveals for James Gunn's DC movie.

Then there are the television and streaming series, including ones that go beyond Marvel and DC, like Skybound's animated hit Invincible. Now, these 10 comics are planned to be adapted for the big and small screen, although when some will finally be released is still to be determined.

10 Stillwater

Written By Chip Zdarksy; Art By Ramón, Mike Spicer, And Rus Wooton

One of the most recent adaptation announcements comes from Amazon, which locked in a new comic book TV show with Stillwater, as Prime Video continues to take the lead in innovative comic book adaptations. Taking place in the titular town of Stillwater, a town where no one dies, the series introduces a cast of outsiders who soon learn that this little corner of paradise is home to a lot of dangers and secrets.

Skybound Set To Expand Gaming IP Across Multiple Platforms

David Alpert and Jon Goldman, two important names at Skybound Entertainment, are attending Gamescom Latam 2024 to talk about IP expansion and more.

While immortality may seem like a miracle at first, this small town has a dark underbelly, proving that immortality can be a curse. Stillwater has the makings of a compelling mystery and horror series for Amazon, one that will grab the attention of Stephen King fans, and anyone who wants to have a jump on the series before it airs should pick up the comic.

9 Wytches

Written By Scott Snyder; Art By Jock, Clem Robins, And Matt Holingsworth

Another series set to hit Amazon soon is Wytches, which is going to be getting the Invincible animated series treatment, though audiences should expect a very different vibe from the spooky supernatural series. While the title may conjure classic images of magical women on broomsticks, Wytches delivers one of the most original and haunting takes on witches ever, one that makes full use of the comic book medium, and should be a dark, but exciting treat in animated for as well.

With a powerhouse creative team and art-style that compliments the eerie, campfire vibes of the narrative, the animated series could be one of the most innovative and different cartoons from Amazon so far, living up to the precedent set by the comic book source material.

8 Nights

Written By Wyatt Kennedy; Art By Luigi Formisano, sco Segala, Gloria Martinellie, And Maria Letizia Mirabella

Also taking the animated route will be the Image Comics series Nights; this feels apropos given the visual style of the series; once again in comparison to Invincible, the art of Nights should communicate readily to animated form, allowing viewers to truly get a taste of what the comic delivers.

Comics are a visual medium, after all, so animation is a phenomenal way to adapt a comic, especially one like Nights. This comic delivers a modern urban Gothic tale, one where the supernatural exist alongside humans, thus making it the perfect comic for fans of the vampires, monsters, and more.

7 Something Is Killing The Children

Written By James Tynion IV; Art By Werther Dell'Edera, World Design, And Miquel Muerto

Another supernatural horror comic set to make its debut on the small screen is none other than adapted for Netflix by the creators of Dark. Something Is Killing the Children is a perfect title for this series, as it is about monsters that hunt and kill children, and only the kids and an elite group of monster hunters can see these creatures.

One of the most recent cases of this featured the character Erika Slaughter entering the picture to kill what is killing the children, becoming one of the most badass monster-hunters in comics. This series was an unexpected major hit for the publisher, and there is a good chance it could be the next break-out successful series to jump from comics to the screen.

6 Bitter Root

Written By Chuck Brown; Art By David F. Walker, Sanford Greene, Rico Renzi, And Clayton Cowles

For those looking for Bitter Root comic book movie directed by Regina King were announced back in 2021. Set during the Harlem Renaissance, for generations the Sangerye family has hunted monsters born from racism and bigotry.

This is not just a phenomenal monster-hunting comic, but it is also deeply inspired by real-world history, politics, and issues, thus leading to a can't-miss series, with a sequel comic also currently coming out. In other words, it is a franchise that will appeal to a wide audience beyond the comic book medium, with years worth of stories to tell.

5 Lady Killer

Written By Joëlle Jones; Art By Jamie S. Rich, Crank, And Laura Allred

lady killer

While there are a lot of supernatural adaptations in the works, one of the most-anticipated Dark Horse Comics adaptations is the more grounded thriller series Lady Killer, which cast Blake Lively as the lead role back in 2021 for the Diablo Cody-written adaptation. Lady Killer is about Jodie, a housewife in the 1960s who secretly leads a double life as an assassin.

The great thing about Lady Killer is that every page oozes with style, even when Jodie brutally kills her marks, and it delivers an iconic, complex female lead who will easily command audience's attention on screen. Of all the adaptations on this list currently in development, this is perhaps the one most likely to diverge from its source material, but in the best possible way, as it can serve as inspiration for even more over-the-top live-action escapades.

4 BRZRKR

Written By Keanu Reeves And Matt Kindt; Art By Ron Garney, Bill Crabtree, And Clem Robins

One of the most anticipated adaptations for years has been BRZRKR, which is set to have two separate adaptations, an anime series and a live-action BRZRKR movie, which scored Fast & Furious director Justin Lin, as of March 8, 2025. Keanu Reeves is not just one of the creators of BRZRKR, but he is also set to portray the lead character of this historical epic about an immortal warrior.

However, death is what this character longs for, and working for the U.S. government may be key to finding an end to his once-never-ending life. With Reeves and Lin attached, BZRKR has the potential to become a fantasy-epic version of the John Wick franchise, one that could sustain multiple sequels beyond just its initial on-screen adventure.

3 Lumberjanes

Written By Grace Ellis; Art By N. D. Stevenson, Brooke Allen, Aubrey Aiese, And Maarta Laiho

For 20 years, BOOM! Studios has developed a diverse catalog of comics. While the main line of comics features mature titles like BRZRKR and Something Is Killing the Children, Lumberjanes, which is set to get an animated film adaptation, followed by a TV show on HBO Max.

This is a comic perfect for fans of Gravity Falls and The Owl House, and this adaptation should fill the void left by these iconic shows, as the source material is reminiscent in vibe, and the on-screen version can capture the same kind of spirit and vibe.

2 Lore Olympus

Written And Illustrated By Rachel Smythe

Also thrilling for webcomic fans was announcement of a Lore Olympus YA animated series back in October 201, though production on the show has stalled somewhat in the years since, leaving it to be determined when the show will finally air.

Lore Olympus was a sensation for Webtoon, winning several Eisner awards over the years, finally concluding in 2024 with over 200 hundred chapters. Lore Olympus is a retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth, while also remixing some other Greek gods, deities, and myths along the way. For the ultimate slow-burn with plenty of drama and longing, this is the Webtoon for them, and hopefully the show will deliver that same level of melodrama and romance.

1 Love Everlasting

Written By Tom King; Art By Elsa Charretier, Clayton Cowles, And Matt Holingsworth

While there are many comic book adaptations stuck in pre-production or production at the time of this writing, hopefully one that was just recently announced will find its way to the big screen sooner rather than later. That is Tom King's Groundhog Day-inspired Love Everlasting comic, which will be turned into a movie by Oscar-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson.

Where Lore Olympus is a classic romance, Love Everlasting turns the romance genre on its head, demonstrating an immense amount of knowledge about the history of romance in comics while delivering a compelling mystery. It is the kind of story that has the potential to captivate legions of viewers once it has been brought into live-action, and if done right, to be an awards contender as well, providing that indie comics from Image Comics and other smaller publishers can make a huge impact on screen.
