Warning: This post contains spoilers for Insecure series finaleInsecure aired its series finale in December 2021, and it’s now become the first HBO series to stream on Netflix. After five seasons, Insecure wrapped up its series finale with a combination of happy (Issa getting engaged) and sad (Molly’s mother dying) moments for the characters, who have been through it. Through the good and the bad, Insecure leaves Issa and company in a solid place, having faced their obstacles and now doing well for themselves.

Issa and Nathan break up at the start of Insecure’s series finale, shortly after he and Lawrence get into a fight. The HBO series begins to skip ahead in time, giving the audience a glimpse of the characters and their relationships over the years. While she’s still a bit hung up on Lawrence, Issa dates Nasir for a while. Molly and Taurean get married; Kelli begins working at Molly’s firm and announces she and Desmond are having a baby together; Tiffany is a homeowner in Denver, but it takes her a while to truly settle in there; and Issa and Lawrence rekindle their romance, living together alongside Lawrence’s son Elijah.

Issa & Lawrence End Up Together, But It Takes A While

Issa and Lawrence’s relationship went through their fair share of ups and downs over the course of Insecure’s five-season run. Issa believed it was too late to get back together with Lawrence, so she tried to push him out of her mind while she did her own thing. While the lovers did end up together, it wasn’t something that happened instantaneously; rather, it took a couple of years after the incident at the party for Issa and Lawrence to be on the same page. Between missed opportunities and missed phone calls, Issa and Lawrence didn’t get back together until after Issa was honest about her insecurities holding her back.

Issa didn’t want to jump into a relationship with Lawrence; she wanted to feel confident about where they stood with each other. Issa had to by her insecurities to give her relationship with Lawrence another genuine try. By the end of Insecure, Lawrence and Issa were in a different place than where they started. They had grown and been through a variety of new experiences. Rekindling their romance, and getting to the point of being engaged and happy, was a work in progress. Issa and Lawrence wouldn’t have gotten to a good place in their relationship if they hadn’t taken their time to work things out for themselves first.

Issa & Nathan: Why They Really Break Up

Issa and Nathan had a decent relationship for a while, but there was also a ton of stuff that got in the way of their ultimate happiness. One such person was Lawrence, with whom Nathan fought at Tiffany and Derek’s party after Lawrence tells Issa he loved her. Nathan felt that the messiness between Issa and Lawrence was toxic, and he didn’t want to be involved in it in any way. There was a sense of awkwardness, too, between Issa and Nathan, and it was easy to see that Issa wasn’t fully invested in her relationship with Nathan — even as they searched for apartments together. There was always something off.

The Deeper Meaning Behind Issa’s Final Glimpse In The Mirror

Issa Rae as Issa in Insecure.

Throughout Insecure, Issa talked to a persona she called “Mirror Bitch.” It was akin to a voice in her head telling her what she should and shouldn’t do — her own worst enemy was herself. Ahead of the series finale’s last scene, Issa is getting ready and she’s happy. She’s engaged to Lawrence, she’s doing great in her job, and she seems to be at peace. When Issa looks in the mirror one last time, Mirror Bitch is nowhere to be found. The lack of Mirror Bitch is a good thing — it reveals how much Issa has grown.

She’s finally content with the things that are happening in her life. Issa is no longer second-guessing herself, at least for the time being, which is a big deal considering how often she did so before. The disappearance of Mirror Bitch means there is no one who is critiquing how much of a mess her life has been. Issa is finally in a good place, emotionally, mentally, financially, and romantically by the end of Insecure, and she no longer needs to question her decisions. Even if it doesn’t last forever, it’s a huge step in the right direction for Issa.

What Happens To Issa’s Job - Is The Blocc Successful?

Insecure season 5 saw Issa start her own business: The Blocc aimed to and highlight local businesses in South LA, as well as artists, through block parties. Issa struggled to get the business going at first, but after a year or two, The Blocc was thriving. By the Insecure series finale, Issa’s business was a hit, and she was even making enough money to afford a new car and home. After all the hard work she put in, and with the of her friends, family, and the local community, The Blocc was proving to be incredibly successful, and the booming business played a part in Issa’s happiness.

Why Kelli Changes Her Mind About Having Kids

Kelli was perhaps Issa’s most confident friend. She was unashamed of being herself, spoke her mind, and didn’t take any bullshit from anyone. One of the things she was adamant about throughout Insecure was that she didn’t want any kids. However, after dating Desmond and becoming pregnant, Kelli changes her mind about wanting children. It’s a valid decision, and the reason behind it stems from Kelli’s “death.” After attending her college reunion, Kelli was mistakenly presumed dead, and that changed her outlook on life and desire for children. Kelli even stopped drinking (for the most part).

Crucially, being with Desmond helped to change Kelli’s mind about kids. It was the kind of relationship that brought Kelli to life and altered her outlook. Being with Desmond brought out the side of her that wanted to try and experience new things. Perhaps it was simply that Kelli hadn’t met anyone before Desmond who she wanted to have kids with, but it’s also possible her change of heart was the result of her own personal development. Kelli having an identity crisis after being thought dead can change anyone, and finally being in a relationship that gave her inspiration to do things she wouldn’t have before solidified her decision.

The Real Meaning Of Insecure’s Ending

While much was made about Issa’s love life throughout Insecure, the show was always about the friendships that carried Issa through everything that life threw her way. One of the series’ core elements was the relationship between Issa and Molly, who had their fair share of trials and tribulations, though they never stopped being there for each other. Insecure’s series finale might end with Issa getting her happily ever after with Lawrence, but the final scene includes a phone conversation between her and Molly, who’s on her honeymoon with Taurean.

Insecure’s ending drives home the importance of Issa’s friendship with Molly — it’s the true love story of the show. These women have been through a lot together, and they’ve seen each other through the best and worst of times. Still, Issa and Molly continue to choose each other, regardless of how their busy lives have affected their friendship. Between fights, messy romantic relationships, death, and good times, Issa and Molly’s relationship is what has seen them both through. They wouldn’t be where they are without each other’s . Their relationship is a testament to the strength of friendship, and how important it is for women to have each other’s backs.
