The live-action Amazon Prime Video's Invincible animated series, I couldn't have been happier. Now, the long-talked-about Invincible live-action movie is finally starting to get updates, and while it could be fantastic, I am happy that the franchise is in no rush to release the film.
A live-action Invincible movie has been in development for years, with the project getting announced all the way back in 2017. In the years since the movie was announced, two seasons of Amazon Prime Video's animated Invincible series. With how few updates there have been on the movie, it is likely that even more seasons will be released ahead of the film. I don't particularly think a live-action movie is necessary in the midst of the incredible animated series, but if it is going to happen, this update makes me feel more confident in the project.
Invincible's Live-Action Movie Has Multiple Challenges It Can't Rush Through
It Will Be Compared To The Movie & The Show
It has been confirmed that the Invincible movie is taking its time, with series creator Robert Kirkman commenting on the state of the film and the challenges that come with making it. According to Kirkman, he wants the Invincible movie to be perfect, meaning that they aren't going to rush anything. Kirkman has commented on the unique challenge of creating an Invincible movie that stands out from the animated series but also stays true to the comic books, and figuring this balance out will undoubtedly be difficult. Here are Kirkman's full comments:
It's still in development. We're still working with Universal. You know, the show is going so well. I think the movie absolutely has to be perfect. And so it's taking a lot of time, like getting the pieces aligned and getting everything to work so that we can come out and make it as good as it can possibly be. So it's been in development for a long time, and it's probably going to be in development for a while longer. Just because, in relation to the show, it has to provide a different experience, it has to still be true to 'Invincible' in some interesting ways.
But it has to be its own thing. It has to stand on its own. And so that's something we're spending a lot of time crafting. But I think when it finally happens, it's gonna be really cool. I think it's difficult. And I think you can, that's why the development process is taking so long, because it's tough to figure out, "Okay, the comic is this one thing, and then this animated series is this other thing, and now this movie has to be this third thing. It has to provide a new experience, but, maybe tell the same story, maybe tell a different story." Those are the kinds of things we're trying to figure out. And it has to be as good as the show, but in a lot of ways, it has to be better than the show because, you know, movies are tough, and you got to get audiences into theaters. And that's a process.
It's very difficult, but we've got a good team behind it. And I think that we're hopefully going to do something pretty cool, but it may take so long that Timothée Chalamet can play Omni-Man. The movie process is definitely condensing. And that can be frustrating at times, but it's also a fun challenge. But the animated series, especially for us, I think of it as an expanding process. I think that there's a lot of different scenes if you compare them to the comic, we do more. We put more emotion in them. There's more dialogue going on. There's a little bit more character development happening.
I can understand why making the Invincible movie is so difficult, as it now has to live up to two incredible versions of the story. Back when the project was first announced, it would have only been compared to the comics, meaning that it could get away with a little more. However, the Invincible animated series has proven that the story can be adapted to film while staying faithful to the Invincible comic books' story and tone. Because of this, any live-action movie will now have to exceed the comics and the show in order to succeed.

This Could Be The Only Chance To Launch The Invincible Live-Action Movie Franchise
Because Invincible Needs Multiple Movies
Another major challenge that the Invincible live-action movie faces is that this could be the only chance to launch the Invincible live-action movie franchise. The story of Invincible is absolutely massive, and considering that Invincible season 2 still only scratches the surface of the comics, a single live-action movie undoubtedly won't tell the entire Invincible saga. I'm not sure that the entire Invincible saga could ever be told in movie installments, but the series most likely wants a few entires in order to cover some of the bigger storylines.
Because of the necessity of sequels, Kirkman is right in saying that they have to get the Invincible movie right. A lot of lesser-known superhero franchises have attempted to start movie series and fallen flat with their first entries, with films like Bloodshot, 2019's Hellboy and 2024's The Crow being prime examples of this. If the live-action Invincible movie doesn't live up to past versions, it would not only ruin the chances of future films, but also taint the Invincible brand as a whole. This is because, due to it being a movie, it will draw more eyes than the streaming show.

It's Easier To Wait On The Invincible Live-Action Movie Thanks To Animated Series
We Have Enough Invincible Right Now
I am in no rush to see the live-action Invincible movie, and this is because of Amazon's animated series. We are currently in the midst of a near-perfect adaptation of the Invincible comics, and if given the option between a perfect Invincible animated show or a perfect Invincible movie, I would pick the animated show. With the production of future Invincible seasons ramping up, the wait for future seasons probably won't be near as long, meaning that I am not expecting a drought in amazing Invincible content anytime soon.
Having a live-action movie release at the same time as the streaming show means that there will be two simultaneous Invincible visions, and I don't think that the franchise needs that. Having different versions of Invincible's story, cast, and iconography could confuse general audiences and annoy fans, and I think that it is all around a bad idea. I would much rather wait for the live-action Invincible movie to release after the TV show ends, and since the movie is still a few years off, it is possible that this could be the case.
