Steven Yeun has seemingly found a surprising role in the live-action Invincible movie. In the animated show, Yeun plays the young protagonist, Mark Grayson, who struggles to cope with his place in the galaxy. The show premiered in 2021 and is based on the Invincible comic, which was created by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley. It is currently in the middle of season 2, having taken a short mid-season break. The live-action Invincible movie, meanwhile, has been in development since 2017.
The Invincible season 2, part 1 ending offered insight into the future of the show. The movie is another story, as its development has been slow. While word about its production is limited, Kirkman has offered some insight into the casting process. While speaking with IGN, Kirkman seemingly revealed that Steven Yeun will be playing Cecil Stedman, the head of the Global Defense Agency. Check out his quote below:
It's going through the pipeline slowly. The strikes and everything kind of put a pause on things for a while. We're just now getting back into that, and it's all very exciting but it's not something that we're rushing, it's something that we definitely want to get right. Now that the show is out and the animated series is doing well, we're trying to figure out ways to make sure that it stands apart, works in tandem with the show. To show how cool Invincible is and and doesn't detract from it in any way. So there's a lot of maneuvering that has to go into that and so it is taking a little bit of time but I can't wait for everyone to see Steven Yeun as Cecil Stedman.
Is Kirkman Joking About The Invincible Movie?
With so little information about the Invincible movie, it would be easy to believe everything that Kirkman says about its production. After all, the rest of his statement was a fairly serious answer, which would make a pivot into an unexpected joke surprising. Even if Kirkman's stories are unpredictable, as the season 1 ending revealed, the man himself doesn't necessarily need to be.
Invincible is available for streaming on Prime Video.
If Kirkman is telling the truth, then Steven Yeun being cast as Cecil Stegman would be a massive change of pace. Yeun is used to playing the heroic Mark Grayson, so switching to the underhanded government agent would be a serious shift in direction for him. He also hardly looks the part. Cecil is an old and bitter agent, while Yeun is only 40 years old. It would take major make-up work to make Yeun match Cecil. With that in mind, it is likely that Kirkman is just joking about Yeun's casting.

Invincible Season 2 Part 2 Clip Teases Hopeful Resolution To Part 1 Cliffhanger
Invincible season 2, part 2's first clip teases a hopeful resolution for Mark following the intense cliffhanger at the end of season 2, part 1.
Yeun does have experience with live-action acting, which would make some sort of appearance likely. He had a long stint with The Walking Dead and has appeared in The Twilight Zone, Nope, and Beef in the past few years. For him to return to live-action would be similarly unsurprising, given that he is set to star in the movies Love Me and Mickey 17 within the next two years. Even if Kirkman's comment about Yeun playing Cecil is a joke, Yeun may still star in the live-action Invincible movie.
