Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 3, episode 7!

Invincible season 3, episode 7 just featured one of the Invincible franchise's most shocking deaths, and the moment hurt me way more than it did in the comics. The Invincible comics are full of all kinds of supervillain and superhero deaths, with very few characters being safe throughout the story. Amazon Prime Video's Invincible show is finally getting to the point where characters from the Invincible comic books begin dropping like flies, and while this episode 7 death may be one of the show's biggest yet, the show pulled it off even better than the source material.

multiversal Mark Graysons on Earth. In order to defeat this Invincible army, almost every hero in the Invincible universe has to forces to take down the Viltrumite threat, although not all of them make it out alive.

Rex Splode's Romance With Shrinking Rae Made His Death Much More Heartbreaking

It Gives Audiences Another Thing To Mourn

Rex Splode dies in Invincible season 3, episode 7, and the character's relationship with Shrinking Rae makes his death much more heartbreaking than it is in the comics. During the Invincible War, Rex Splode finds himself facing off against one of the evil Invincibles. Rex promises to distract the Invincible while the other Guardians of the Globe escape. Eventually, Rex runs out of items to charge up, with Invincible grabbing him and preparing to kill him. Rex then charges up his own skeleton, sacrificing himself to save his friends.

Who Voices Conquest In Invincible Season 3

Invincible season 3, episode 7 finally introduces Conquest, with the show revealing what actor will be voicing the beloved Viltrumite villain.

Rex Splode's story in the Invincible show features a major change, as season 3 has started a relationship between him and Shrinking Rae. In the comics, Rae's counterpart dies during the Lizard League's invasion of the missile base. However, the Invincible show keeps Rae alive, with her and Rex having a romantic arc. This plays into Rex Splode's redemption arc and gives the audience another reason to care about Rex. Thus, Rex's death during the Invincible War means that we are not only losing Rex, but also his relationship with Rae.

Is Rex Splode's Death The Saddest Invincible Moment So Far?

Or Is Something Else Sadder?

Invincible has already had a lot of sad moments, but the death of Rex Splode may be the saddest Invincible moment so far. Throughout the show's three seasons, very few main characters have actually died. Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae's deaths were both fakeouts, making them less sad in retrospect. The Invincible show does open with Omni-Man slaughtering the Guardians of the Globe, but viewers most likely haven't grown connected to them enough to care yet.

Rex Splode's death is both a major loss and something audience care about, meaning that it may be the saddest moment in Invincible so far. Invincible has had some tragic moments, such as Mark and Nolan's fight from season 1 and the death of Powerplex's family in season 3. However, since Rex's death was a sacrifice, it takes on a different tone and has a different emotional impact than these moments. So, while it is impossible to objectively say, Rex Splode's death is one of the show's saddest moments so far.

Invincible Without Rex Splode Will Be A Strange Experience (& It's Something The Show Must Handle)

It Will Have To Fill In Some Gaps

In the Invincible comics, Rex Splode's death is permanent, meaning that the Amazon prime Video show will have to figure out how to move on without him. Rex Splode was a pivotal character in the story of Invincible. Not only was he a comic relief character, but he was arguably the main character of the of the Guardians of the Globe and the Teen Team. He is what allowed viewers to spend time with the teams, as Mark was often off on adventures of his own.

Since Rex Splode is now gone, Invincible loses the humor that the character brought with him. On top of that, Invincible will have to flesh out some of the Guardians of the Globe side characters, as the characters outside of Monster Girl and Robot now aren't all that interesting. Rex Splode's death is a major loss in Invincible season 3, episode 7, but the show must find a way to handle it.
