Warning: Spoilers for Invincible season 2

Summary

  • Invincible cleverly hid an Easter egg for the Atom Eve special in a teaser released in January 2023, without anyone noticing.
  • The teaser focused on Mark explaining the long wait for season 2, distracting fans from noticing a younger Atom Eve and her creator sitting in the background.
  • The secrecy was aided by the fact that Atom Eve's backstory and the special were not announced until much later, making it hard to spot the Easter egg.

One of the most clever details found in Invincible relates to how it subtly laid the groundwork for the Invincible: Atom Eve special. After season 1 concluded in April 2021, fans grew increasingly anxious about the show's long hiatus between then and when season 2 began. Invincible finally revealed a teaser that primarily served as a meta-commentary on how long it had been since they had released new episodes. What hid in the shadows was that Invincible had hidden an Easter egg for the Atom Eve special without anyone noticing.

Invincible's Atom Eve and her molecule-bending abilities have made for some of the show's most colorful fight sequences. Here's how they work.

In the teaser, which was released in January 2023, Mark and Allen the Alien are sitting at a Burger Mart, where Allen praises Mark for his fry-cooking abilities. Allen then asks where Mark has been all this time, an allusion to Invincible's extended hiatus. Mark then acts as a mouthpiece for those who had been working on Invincible, giving full details on why it took so long for them to make season 2. Little did anyone notice that a younger version of Atom Eve and her creator, Elias Brandyworth, were also eating at the Burger Mart.

How Invincible's Hiatus Played A Part In Hiding The Easter Egg

Mark Grayson and Allen the Alien come face to face in Invincible Season 2 teaser

Because it knew many were eagerly anticipating its latest update, Invincible hid the Atom Eve Easter egg in plain sight. Because the focus was on Mark explaining to Allen what took so long for season 2 to come out so that Invincible could give away its long overdue latest news, it's easy to miss that Atom Eve and Brandyworth were sitting right behind Mark in the background.

While Atom Eve had been introduced in Invincible, there had been no mention or any buildup to her backstory. Even when Invincible released the trailer, there was no knowledge of an special before season 2 was released. It wasn't announced until Invincible released another trailer in July. So, while it could only be hypothesized who they were, they could have very well been nothing. Even if season 2's villain Angstrom Levy was spotted in the teaser, no one would have known for sure about the special when the Invincible teaser was released.

Allen The Alien's Inclusion Hinted He'd Have His Own Segment

Another hint hidden in the teaser relates to the inclusion of Allen the Alien. It would seem that the characters shown in the Burger Mart were a massive clue to multiple surprises - not just Atom Eve. As someone who was far from the protagonist, there was little expectation for Allen the Alien to become the focus of his own episode. However, that's exactly what happened with the storyline for episode 3, which gave Allen his own turn in the spotlight. Sharing the teaser with Mark acted as subtle foreshadowing of the shadow he'd cast on Invincible season 2.
