Summary

  • According to Invincible co-creator Ryan Ottley, a Mark Grayson vs. Superman showdown would be a "gore fest" that would sprawl outward and envelop other big-name DC players, with the artist specifically referencing Batman and Lobo.
  • Ryan Ottley imagined a grand crossover, with an epic showdown that would be "a bloodbath" as the two powerful characters went at one another without holding anything back.
  • Superman and Invincible could push each other to their limits, creating a brutal battle for the ages between two of comics' most devastatingly powerful alien heroes.

The co-creator of Invincible has dreamed up the ultimate crossover, imagining what it would be like to pit Invincible against Superman in an all-out brawl. Artist Ryan Ottley suggested that an epic confrontation between Mark Grayson and the Man of Steel would invariably "be a gore fest like you wouldn't believe."

In response to a question during a Reddit AMA, Ottley conceived of the most jaw-dropping way to integrate Invincible into the DC Universe for the perfect dream collaboration. In his post, he hypothesizes a dream fight between Invincible and Superman that would be so grandiose in scale that the likes of Lobo, the Viltrumites, and Lex Luthor would all need to get involved.

For a comic series notorious for being bloody, Ottley rightly assumes that such a combination could be a "bloodbath," perhaps the biggest that DC Comics would have ever seen.

Perhaps what is even more fascinating than the prospect of "Invincible vs. Superman" is the ing players that could be involved, according to Ottley.

During a Reddit AMA, one asked the Invincible co-creator and illustrator if there was any crossover or team-up with anyone that Ryan Ottley would like to see. "Bonus points for any details," the added. And just like that, Ottley delivered with a fantastic bit of comic book fantasy booking. Ottley had the following to say:

Oh, definitely Superman. And it would be a gore fest like you wouldn't believe. Viltrumites would get Batman and Lobo on their side and they'd construct a plan to take down Clark and his entire Kryptonian race. Clark would hire Lex [Luthor] out of desperation to help him survive. Let the bloodbath happen DC, don't be afraid.

While Ottley doesn't detail the reason why exactly they'd want to fight, Invincible already doesn't respect Superman. If he's already not a fan out of pettiness, it's plausible to imagine them at odds with higher stakes on the line.

The Invincible character is no stranger to crossovers, as someone who met Batman in Invincible #33 and earned the respect of Spider-Man in a full-blown team-up. As a result, it's hard for audiences not to have their minds racing at the thought of Invincible sharing s with more of Marvel and DC's finest.

Perhaps what is even more fascinating than the prospect of "Invincible vs. Superman" is the ing players that could be involved, according to Ottley. While Lobo wanting a piece of Superman for himself shouldn't come as a surprise – as Lobo's presence is enough to insult the Man of Steel sometimes – Invincible somehow convincing Batman to him against one of his most trusted allies is an incredible prospect to consider. All in all, Ryan Ottley's response to the question is a fun "what if" to consider, if nothing else.

Readers familiar with the Injustice storyline know how brutal it is when the World's Finest of DC Comics find themselves at odds. Similarly, Lex Luthor and Superman ing forces is similar to their current alliance in the comics.

If Invincible and Superman allowed themselves to rage out, especially with their allies by their side, their showdown truly would be a bloodbath for the ages.

Superman isn't as infamous for having bloody, knock-down-drag-out battles with his foes as frequently as Invincible is, but that doesn't mean the Man of Steel doesn't know anything about brutality. Readers shouldn't forget how Superman is portrayed in the Injustice comics, showing that when Clark Kent allows his rage to speak for him, then he becomes an absolute menace. The same can be said for Mark Grayson when at his most furious. If Invincible and Superman allowed themselves to rage out, especially with their allies by their side, their showdown truly would be a bloodbath for the ages.
