The trailer for Starward Industries' release The Invincible includes a retro-futuristic motion tracker reminiscent of the tool from Alien: Isolation. Few details have been released since the reveal of The Invincible last year, but the new trailer raises a number of intriguing questions about the game's story and gameplay.
So far, little is known about the title beyond the setting and general plot. The Invincible takes place in a retro-future timeline similar to the Fallout universe without the apocalypse. The protagonist Dr. Yasna travels to a desolate planet, Regis III, using 1950s-style technology and must find her missing crewmates using her equipment and wits. The developers have announced that the game will feature a non-linear plot with branching storylines similar to Dying Light 2, but little has been revealed beyond that fact. The Invincible is based on a novel by Polish author Stanislaw Lem of the same name, but clearly, the game will take liberties to accommodate different paths players can take.
The trailer released by similar tool from Alien: Isolation, and turns to find a man pointing a gun at her with a one-eyed robot at his side. Who he is and what he wants remain unclear as the trailer fades out.
While the plot of The Invincible remains mysterious, the makeup of the game's developer offers some clues to how the title may turn out. Many of Starward Industries are former employees of CD Projekt RED and worked on games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series. The Witcher in particular seems to share many similarities with The Invincible. Both are based on books by Polish authors, both are single-player experiences with branching storylines, and both put a heavy emphasis on the story within the game. While The Invincible appears to play as a first-person game rather than third-person, the inspiration is clear even from the scant details that have been revealed about the title.
Slated to release sometime in 2022, the mystery around The Invincible is intriguing in itself. Next to nothing is known about the gameplay of the title and the plot remains under wraps for those unfamiliar with Stanislaw Lem's work. The Invincible is set to be Starward Industries' first game, but the team behind it has an impressive resume in the industry. If it lives up to the tantalizing hints that have been released about it, The Invincible could come to be a worthy successor to The Witcher and other games that have come before it.
