added to ed models. Now, the company has brought back external display for Stage Manager and made the all-new Freeform app available for .
Apple rolled out iPadOS 16.2 on Dec. 13, marking the second revision of iPadOS 16. The software was initially delayed due to the complexity of Stage Manager, meaning that iOS 16.1 was the first available version of iPadOS 16. With iOS 16.2, Apple seems to have fixed the issues with Stage Manager's external display on the iPad. After updating to the latest software, M1 and M2-equipped iPads can utilize full external display with Stage Manager on iOS 16.2.
Use Up To Eight Apps Simultaneously On iPadOS 16.2
Before updating to iOS 16.2, iPad s could connect to external displays with a USB-C cable or Lightning adapter. However, the device's screen could only be mirrored to the external display and could not be extended. iPadOS also could not adjust the graphical interface to the aspect ratio of the connected display, which placed large back borders on the sides of typical monitors.
While Apple added Stage Manager to more iPad models with iOS 16.2, external display is limited to M1 and M2 devices. Stage Manager on iOS 16.2 can run four applications simultaneously on each display for a total of eight concurrent applications. After updating to iOS 16.2, Stage Manager can be activated through the Settings app or Control Center. Once it's enabled, connecting an iPad to an external display will automatically extend the tablet's software to the newly-found space.
Another iOS 16.2 feature that provides s with a bigger workspace with an infinite canvas — albeit in a much different form than Stage Manager — is the Freeform app. Apple has overhauled the Notes app in recent years to maximize the Apple Pencil, but Freeform takes those advancements a step further. The app is an infinite-canvas workspace that allows s to draw and create in any direction with unlimited available space. It's designed with collaboration in mind, so Freeform documents can be shared with others or used while on a FaceTime call with collaborators.
Aside from the flagship features, Apple introduced a revised HomeKit architecture to improve performance. It comes shortly after adding for the Matter standard of smart home devices in iPadOS 16, which coincided with an overhauled Home app. To access all the latest features with iPadOS 16.2, navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the on-screen prompts to install the newest software version for iPad.
