At WWDC 2023, Apple announced everything new coming to iPhone with iOS 17, including a new StandBy mode that turns it into a smart display while charging. Other key features introduced with iOS 17 include an upgraded Phone app with Posters and Live Voicemail, a new NameDrop feature in AirDrop that lets s easily exchange information, and an all-new Journal app that makes on-device journaling easy thanks to personalized suggestions based on a 's recent activity.
With iOS 17, thanks to their always-on display. This allows StandBy to always be displayed on the screen, and automatically dim to red at night so that a 's sleep isn't disturbed. On other models, s will need to tap the screen to view the StandBy mode.
How StandBy Mode Works On iPhone
There are plenty of third-party nightstand apps available on the App Store that display a clock on the screen, but StandBy goes a step further by providing more useful options. For example, on a nightstand, it might be useful to just display the time, and there are a range of aesthetic styles to choose from. On a desk or kitchen counter, s might want to see the calendar and weather, or view a slideshow of their favorite photos.
StandBy also doubles up as a full screen music player, displaying the currently playing track along with album artwork. While the music player isn't available as one of the StandBy views, it is accessible by tapping the three dots at the top of the screen to play music from a preferred app. StandBy also s Siri, Live Activities, and incoming calls. Additionally, the widgets on the screen Smart Stacks, which means the iPhone will display the relevant widget at the right time of day.
It's worth noting that StandBy won't work if the iPhone is lying flat or propped up vertically while charging. If using a MagSafe charger, StandBy will a 's preferred view and display that. Unfortunately, StandBy isn't available for iPad, which is a shame considering the bigger screen would make for a better smart display. StandBy will be available as part of the iOS 17 update for iPhone. While the public beta will be available to in July 2023, the final version will roll out to iPhone s in September 2023.
