Warning! Spoilers for Iron Man #7 below.
In the Marvel Universe, Iron Man #7, a conversation about godhood is had, and there's a debate about how exactly the Mad Titan fits into the description.
Defining what a god is in the Marvel Universe can be tricky, as there are many definitions of what qualifies as such. There are characters who are considered gods in titles, such as Thor, the God of Thunder, or Loki the God of Mischief and Evil. There are also beings with God-like ability of creation, such as the One-Above-All. There are also those who have God-like powers, who can make the seemingly impossible happen and change the universe in an instant - such as Thanos when wielding all of the Infinity Stones. Thanos has used the Infinity Gauntlet and Stones to commit god-like acts, like snapping away half of all living beings.
In previews for Iron Man #7 by Christopher Cantwell, Cafu, Frank D'Armata, VC's Joe Caramanga, Iron Man and his crew of heroes get ready to face Korvac, who wants to increase his god-like powers by stealing more from Galactus' worldship. As the squad debates a team name, Frogman suggests they go by "God Fighters," since they're about to come face-to-face with a powerful god-like villain. Misty Knight immediately responds with, "can someone even tell me what 'god' means in this universe?"
It's a fair question, as with so many god-like creatures showing massive powers and abilities to reshape reality, it's got to be hard to define what a god truly is anymore. Misty brings up Jehovah, Yahweh, Allah, Buddha, and Thanos as examples. She's quickly corrected that Buddha was a man, while Thanos is a Titan. Misty responds by further questioning what makes a god. Is it an android? a Celestial? Or someone who can wield a glove with gems?
It's not at all surprising that some might view Thanos as a god in the Marvel Universe. After all, he singlehandedly wiped away half of all living creatures by using the Infinity Gauntlet to rewrite reality. Who could possibly be capable of committing such a universe-changing event, but a god? If you're a normal person on Earth seeing a powerful being reshape reality in front of your eyes, it's a fair assumption to make. Thanos might not be an actual god, but his actions have done more than enough to make people believe he actually is. Iron Man #7 is in stores later this week.
