In the same vein as Zahler's other feature films, Bone Tomahawk and Brawl in Cell Block 99 (also starring Vaughn), 2018's Dragged Across Concrete follows morally gray characters who do bad things for the sake of helping their loved ones. Ridgeman and Lurasetti get suspended after a video resurfaces of them committing police brutality against a drug dealer. However, they are frustrated not because they were caught, but because they have people who depend on them whom they can no longer provide for because of their suspension. This is why Ridgeman and Lurasetti later get involved in a bank heist, as they will do whatever it takes to provide for their families.

Why You Should Watch Dragged Across Concrete

Vince Vaughn and Mel Gibson from Dragged Across Concrete

This is an unapologetically gritty film that is unafraid of making its protagonists unlikable. Dragged Across Concrete is similar to other dark cop movies in that it is a slow burn that takes its time developing characters and letting scenes play out. By doing this, it can not only thoroughly explore themes like police brutality and corruption while also being an effective character drama about people who justify doing awful things for what they think are good reasons.
