In the second half of season four of Abbott Elementary, we saw a shakeup in the staffing of our favorite Philadelphia-based school. Ava, the fearless leader who fought for equal opportunities for her students, was fired by the district for taking bribes. This left the principal position open for another member of the Abbott Elementary cast of characters to take. It set up a long-awaited opportunity for one beloved character: Gregory.
In Abbott Elementary season 1, it was established that the principal role had originally been Gregory's intended position, but he didn't get the job because it was given to Ava. As the district searched for a replacement this season, Gregory was chosen to step into the role as interim principal. During this short time, Gregory got a taste of his dream, but it might be setting up a storyline where he feels he has grown beyond Abbott.
The Abbott Elementary Season 4 Finale Establishes Gregory's Need To Leave
Gregory Has Outgrown His Role As A Teacher
In the Abbott Elementary season 4 finale, Ava was reestablished as the principal of the school, bumping Gregory back to being a teacher once again. Although teaching was something that Gregory had learned to love, being a principal is his true calling. Prior to his promotion, Gregory had had some money problems and decided to get a second job, an embarrassing enough situation for him that he didn't even tell his girlfriend about it. When he got his first check as principal, it changed everything for him. The promotion's increased pay alone could be a motivator for him to start seeking out an open principal role at another school.
From the money to the responsibility to the respect he received from the students' parents, Gregory was finally in his element. He thrived in the role. This is why, in Abbott Elementary season 5, Gregory might and should explore other employment opportunities outside of Abbott. Teaching is a noble profession. However, for his character to continue growing and thriving, Gregory has to work toward his goal rather than returning to a role that he's outgrown.
Gregory Is Unlikely Leaving Abbott Elementary, But He Should Consider Leaving The School
Gregory Is Ready To Grow, Not Leave
Gregory leaving Abbott Elementary does not mean he would leave Abbott Elementary. Although the show primarily takes place inside the school, it would provide a brand-new opportunity for the writers to explore life outside of Abbott for the characters. It would also give the show a realistic development: As much as many of us like our coworkers, we are not all meant to stay at our first jobs forever. If Gregory's character were to really have a chance to be fulfilled, then it is time to leave Abbott. This is where the writing team would need to get a little creative. How do they keep Gregory relevant when he is not in the same vicinity as the rest of the ensemble? The answer is in Janine and Gregory's relationship.

Abbott Elementary’s Season 4 Finale Comeback Was Way Sadder Than I Expected
Abbott Elementary's season 4 finale brought back a great recurring guest star, but I can't believe how unexpectedly moving their role in the show was.
This would be an interesting turn for the young couple - a new challenge for them to overcome in Abbott Elementary. If Gregory is no longer at Abbott, then the pair will likely see each other less. This might compel them to move in together to progress their relationship outside a professional setting. In order to keep Gregory a central character, we could see him video chatting with Janine while having lunch together, go on outings outside of school, collaborate on field trips, etc. There are so many ways to incorporate Gregory without him being physically at Abbott. All it will take is some patience from fans.
