Abbott Elementary season 4, series creator and star Quinta Brunson revealed this past summer at San Diego Comic-Con that the show's fourth installment would include an unexpected crossover with the potential to change television.
In posts by Always Sunny star and co-creator Rob McElhenney, he confirmed that their two shows would collide in a crossover episode. The posts, included below, show McElhenney with Brunson, in addition to Abbott cast Tyler James Williams, who plays Gregory, and William Stanford Davis, who portrays Mr. Johnson. Always Sunny actors Danny DeVito and Charlie Day are also present in the photos, which feature the Abbott Elementary school in the background.
What The Abbott Elementary & Always Sunny Crossover Means
It's A Clash Of Tones
It's worth noting that the crossover is made a little more seamless because ABC, which airs Abbott, and FXX, which airs It's Always Sunny, are both owned by Disney. It also helps that both series take place in Philadelphia. Although specific story details about the crossover and how it will happen are so far under wraps, Brunson and McElhenney have teased a collaboration on social media.
Abbott Elementary season 4 premieres on ABC on October 9 at 9:30 PM ET, while It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 does not have a release date.
The most striking thing about the crossover is arguably the contrasting tone between the two shows. Even though Abbott debuted with a more realistically cynical viewpoint about teaching, it has mellowed with each new season and is a generally more optimistic series. This is a contrast to the FXX series, which has also changed but is known for the occasional controversial Always Sunny episode.
Our Take On The Abbott & It's Always Sunny Crossover
It Could Be Great
Abbott Elementary season 3 went a little too far with the celebrity cameos, not even bothering with credible reasons why Bradley Cooper might just pop in at an underfunded and neglected public school. A one-scene cameo by Kevin Hart proves to be similarly flimsy. But if handled well, and if kept true to the characters and the situation, a visit from the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang could add a burst of energy to Abbott Elementary and lead to some clever scene pairings.
