The studio clearly never intended to develop James Bond spin-offs before 2021, but No Time to Die seemingly sets up four of them. No Time to Die is the epic conclusion to Daniel Craig's tenure as the British spy, but even though it acts as something of a swan song and even kills off 007 for the first time, it still introduces fresh, new characters. The five-movie series that began with Casino Royale has seen some eccentric and unique characters come and go, but between Paloma (Ana de Armas) and Nomi (Nashana Lynch), the 2021 movie had the most exciting ing cast yet, and their larger, more action-packed futures were hinted at too.
The Bond franchise has a strict no-spin-off rule, as franchise producer Barabara Broccoli explained, "It would be like making Hamlet without Hamlet." The producer makes a good point, as movie franchises are becoming so saturated and attempting to expand too fast. The John Wick franchise already has two spin-off projects in the works (and others are undoubtedly being discussed). The Fast & Furious cast even wants to make crossovers with Transformers and Jurassic World. However, there's a great case for several No Time to Die spin-offs, especially as the movie makes so much effort to set them up.
4 Nomi
A spin-off movie about Nomi is the most obvious setup in No Time to Die, as she's a badass agent assigned the 007 title, and Bond often finds himself in competition with her. That opened up the possibility of a movie that wasn't about James Bond but was still about 007. Along with the 007 title, Nomi had a cool car and gadgets, and in many ways, she was cooler and more stylish than Bond. It would have worked even better if Nomi continued the main series as the new 007. However, that was quickly undermined when she felt obliged to hand over the number to Bond for his last mission.
Nomi even brought back some goofy humor from the older James Bond movies. As great as Craig's Bond movies are, especially because they're grounded and have a clear character arc for the first time, they're absolutely humorless and lack the fun of the previous movies in the franchise, particularly Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore's outings. Nomi drops the one-liner, "You know what time it is? time to die," as she spin-kicks Obruchev off a ledge and to his death. Nomi was more likable than Bond and more relatable, and she could easily lead a series of movies of her own, especially if it leans into that kind of humor.
3 Paloma
Just like other Bond Girls, Paloma appears briefly to help Bond on his mission, only to never be seen again. However, no other Bond Girl has had such a huge impact on audiences, and following her appearance in No Time to Die, there was an immediate demand for Paloma to return. No other Bond Girl has been cooler or more of a hero as Paloma blasted her way through the streets of Cuba, and de Armas was totally believable in the role of a C.I.A. agent. Paloma only has around 10 minutes of screen time, but the bubbly, agile agent could lead an explosive movie of her own.
Paloma ended the Bond Girl archetype of beautiful women incapable of defending themselves, and she could lead a thrilling Cuba-based spy movie. And it could even connect to GoldenEye and Die Another Day, as Bond also visits Cuba in those outings. However, while it's unlikely that Paloma will get a spin-off movie or even return in another Bond movie, Ballerina will undoubtedly make up for it. Ballerina is a John Wick spin-off that will see Armas playing an assassin brought up by the Ruska Roma, and it could follow through on an all-out, badass de Armas-led action movie, something that The Gray Man failed to deliver on.
2 Mathilde
One of the many surprising, expectation-subverting choices made in No Time to Die was revealing that Bond is a father, as Mathilde is Bond and Madeleine Swann's (Léa Seydoux) daughter. On the face of it, it sounds ridiculous that a five-year-old character in a James Bond movie could get a spin-off, but it actually makes a lot of sense. In the years following No Time to Die, Madeleine could keep Bond's occupation a secret from Mathilde or tell her grand stories about her father's globetrotting life. Growing up with these stories, it'd hardly be surprising that Mathilde would follow in her father's footsteps.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge was reportedly asked to develop a script around Mathilda (via Waller-Bridge's Bond ideas were rejected, they could be used for a standalone Mathilda movie. And what's most interesting about the idea is that there'd be a significant time jump, making it the first Bond film set in the future. Weirdly, there are now two potential spin-offs about an expert assassin named Mathilde, as a Leon: The Professional spin-off following Mathilda has been on the cards for decades. But the James Bond spin-off has so much more potential.
1 Q
A spin-off movie about Q (Ben Whishaw), a stiff office-based agent, might not be immediately alluring, especially as he's mostly a vessel for sarcastic one-liners and introducing Bond to new gadgets. However, this five-movie Bond series elevated Q more than any of the character's previous iterations. There were times when Q was on location and part of the action, as he was running around with Bond and in villains' crosshairs on the Alps in Spectre. And in No Time to Die, parts of Q's personal life are surprisingly shown, as it is revealed that the character is gay when he is planning a dinner date.
No Time to Die humanized Q more than any other movie and showed that he's more than just the quartermaster or "the guy in the chair." A spin-off could follow Q as he attempts to keep his work life detached from his personal life and vice versa, as those lives crossed paths in the 2021 movie, and Q wasn't happy about it. However, while Q's scenes in No Time to Die could lead to a spin-off, it won't be with Whishaw. Whishaw expects to be replaced for Bond 26, and the actor explained, "I think I'm done now. I've done the three that I was... contracted to do" (via IMDb).
