Caution: spoilers ahead for The Suicide Squad

What comes next in the DCEU career of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Or so it seems... In The Suicide Squad's mid-credits scene, viewers return to the opening battle's aftermath, and Weasel (who everyone presumed had drowned) splutters into life before heading off to kill more children (probably).

Weasel's The Suicide Squad survival could merely act as the punchline to an earlier joke. After the creature drowned, Flag asked why no one checked whether Weasel could swim, and his watery resilience in the mid-credits sequence pays off that gag. On the other hand, James Gunn may have included Weasel's survival to ensure the character (performed by Sean Gunn) could return in a future DCEU project. All but confirming this was his intention, The Suicide Squad's recent watch party saw James Gunn claim he had "written a lot of ideas" for a continuation of Weasel's compelling and nuanced DCEU arc.

If Weasel does make an unlikely return to the franchise, where could the skinny furball show up next? The obvious answer is Aquaman 2, or something. And, of course, the Sean Gunn connection makes a Weasel appearance in Peacemaker even more likely. Peacemaker evidently remains on Task Force X's staff after The Suicide Squad (we see Waller's assistants watching Cena's hospital bed), so it's only natural that he might encounter fellow Corto Maltese survivor, Weasel. Perhaps when Waller realizes the rat is still alive, Peacemaker is sent on pest control duty.

But Peacemaker certainly isn't the only option for Weasel's prospective DCEU return. 2022's Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Allen brought a comedic presence to Justice League (both versions), and while his solo movie will likely be a more serious affair, he and Weasel could make for a fun double-act.

Though you wouldn't necessarily expect it, Weasel's next DCEU credit might actually come via HBO Max's  the Black Lanterns.

Wherever Weasel makes his grand comeback, there's plenty of the character still to explore. The Suicide Squad references his awful crimes, but the truth of Weasel's backstory remain entirely unknown, leaving fans just as intrigued as the other Task Force X recruits about this weird creature and his origin. These are questions future DCEU projects can answer, and though it's hard to say exactly where and when Weasel will return, we can probably rule out a confrontation with Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne in The Batman.
