Season 2 of Wednesday season 2 will attempt to follow up the viral moment with a waltz from Gomez and Morticia Addams, going by the trailer.

Wednesday season 2 promises a new villain and a new mystery, and I’m hopeful that Ortega stepping in as an executive producer will ensure that Wednesday stays true to the main protagonist. Not only does the star look the part, but she has a good grasp of the character and her mannerisms. It’s reassuring that Ortega’s favorite episode from season 1 also happens to be the one that I think should be used as a cornerstone for season 2.

Jenna Ortega's Favorite Wednesday Episode Is "Friend Or Woe"

The Star Calls Episode 3 "Underrated"

In a TUDUM article from 2023, Ortega revealed that her favorite Wednesday episode from season 1 was episode 3, “Friend or Woe.” Ortega explained that she felt the cast and crew had found their footing by this episode and detailed why she felt the episode was underrated by viewers.

“I feel like episode 3 is kind of underrated just because there’s that explosion with the statue and we get that awesome cello piece. There’s the god-awful pilgrim costume. There’s the fight sequence. There’s a lot of Eugene [Moosa Mostafa], who’s just the funniest guy of all time, in my opinion. We also shot it midway through, so I felt like everyone kind of found their footing and was in the grip of things by the time we shot that.”

"Friend of Woe" has Wednesday and the students of Nevermore Academy attend Outreach Day in the town of Jericho. Wednesday accompanied the marching band with her cello during the dedication of a new memorial statue of founder Joseph Crackstone. However, Wednesday rigs the statue to explode with help from Thing, and the townspeople flee in a panic as she stoically performs Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.” The episode highlights Wednesday's sly and rebellious nature as she refuses to conform to the expectations of Nevermore Academy. Moments like these in the episode helped cement Ortega's iconic performance as the titular character.

Wednesday Episode 3 Got Wednesday Addams Right

"Friend or Woe" Is Peak Wednesday Vibes

With some truly iconic moments, it's no wonder that "Friend of Woe" is Ortega's favorite, and one that viewers may need to reevaluate. One of the best scenes in the episode is Wednesday volunteering at Pilgrim World, where part of her job requires her to offer fudge samples to visitors while wearing a pilgrim costume. The laugh-out-loud moment has her speaking German to a group of foreign tourists, during which she points out historical inaccuracies and informs them that the fudge-making process included the exploitation of indigenous people. Her dry delivery elevates the scene and captures the character perfectly.

Not only is 'Friend or Woe' hilarious, it is Wednesday Addams at her best.

The scene brings to mind another classic Wednesday moment from the film Addams Family Values, when Wednesday (Christina Ricci) sabotaged Camp Chippewa’s Thanksgiving performance. Another fantastic representation of the character is the scene when the statue of Joseph Crackstone goes up in flames, while Wednesday continues to play her cello, casting a wry smirk in Principal Weems’s direction. Not only is “Friend or Woe” hilarious, it is Wednesday Addams at her best - wreaking havoc, causing chaos, and going up against the establishment.

I Hope Wednesday Season 2 Has More Of The Real Wednesday Addams

Ortega Has Embodied The Character

While I love Wednesday and Jenna Ortega’s portrayal, the actor previously revealed there were moments during the series that felt like the writers didn’t do the character justice. As Ortega discussed changing lines in Wednesday with Dax Shepard and Monica Pan on their podcast, “Armchair Expert,” in 2023.

“Everything that Wednesday does, everything I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. [...] There were times on that set where I even became almost unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines.”

There is a lot to look forward to in season 2 of Wednesday, including the casting of Anthony Michael Hall, with will act as an Edward Scissorhands reunion with director Tim Burton. With plenty of new characters and a new story, I hope that the season will portray Wednesday Addams as well as "Friend or Woe" did, so we can see more of the character at her best. If Ortega can help steer the direction of the series, she will hopefully get more episodes of Wednesday that reflect the devios nature of the character.
