J.J. Abrams says a Pacific Rim entered the picture. And so, an anthology series was developed instead.
Dan Trachtenberg's explained the Cloverfield monster's origins, as well as how all the movies connect to one another. But at one point in time, Abrams had another idea on his mind to specifically connect all three movies.

In response to a question during a recent Facebook Q&A for The Cloverfield Paradox about a potential Cloverfield film that connects all three movies together, J.J. Abrams said a crossover film was being considered, but it was merely a "what if?" scenario and not something that they're actively developing.
"We've talked about versions of things. When we did 10 Cloverfield Lane, we were thinking Michelle - the character Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays - it's such a sort of weird origin story of this kind of incredibly, I think, awesome heroine. The idea of following her story is really cool. And then at one point, we were like, 'You know what would be really cool? What if they crossed paths with Gugu [Mbatha-Raw]'s character Ava?' You start to think of 'what ifs.' And I think the bigger ideas that we've had about where this thing goes haven't necessarily been those ideas, but they've kind of been fun theoretical offshoots."
Given that Michelle hears a call on the radio at the end of 10 Cloverfield Lane, asking people to the human resistance in fighting the monsters, a Cloverfield team-up movie could actually work with her as the lead character, but that would have to be without Ava in the film. At the end of The Cloverfield Paradox, Ava and Schmidt are coming back down to Earth in an escape pod, but as they enter the atmosphere, a giant monster - one that looks like a much bigger version of the original Cloverfield monster - emerges from the clouds, presumably swallowing the escape pod whole.
Plus, Ava and Michelle's stories exist in different periods of time. The Cloverfield Paradox takes place in 2028, whereas 10 Cloverfield Lane is believed to take place in 2016 (when the film released). While a Cloverfield team-up movie may never happen, that doesn't mean Bad Robot still can't make a proper Cloverfield sequel.
