Warning: Contains spoilers for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: El Aleph. If there’s anything most JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fans can agree on, it’s that Lisa Lisa was utterly wasted as a character. Despite her cool and imposing demeanor and major role as both Joseph’s teacher and mother, she doesn’t have a large role in Battle Tendency and was easily defeated in her only major fight, all of which has been a major point of contention for decades.

Few characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure have been wasted to the same degree as Lisa Lisa, but that’s finally starting to change. From 2022 to 2024, Lisa Lisa was the star of a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure spinoff novel, El Aleph, which was set between Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders and chronicled her time as one of the leading figures of the Speedwagon Foundation. The simple idea of her getting her own story is one thing, but everything El Aleph did with Lisa Lisa completely rectified her poor handling in the manga, and overall, it was great to see.

Why El Aleph Is A Great Lisa Lisa Story

Junjo Shindo’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: El Aleph is the first story to feature Lisa Lisa as the protagonist, and sure enough, it’s very good to her. Regarding her personality, Lisa Lisa is still the same strong and imposing woman she was in Battle Tendency, but not only does her increased presence allow for even more chances to show that off, but her increased age has also emphasized her comion and optimism, as well. Lisa Lisa is a far more well-rounded character in El Aleph compared to Battle Tendency, and that made for a great reintroduction to her character.

Naturally, Lisa Lisa also had a great showing as a fighter. Not only is Lisa Lisa even more proficient in Hamon, but even with the threat of Stands, something no one had dealt with before then, she always kept a level head and ended up being the one to deal with enemy Stand s more often than not, despite not being a Stand , herself. Lisa Lisa has never been a more competent fighter than she was in El Aleph, and it more than makes up for how poorly treated she was in Battle Tendency.

Regarding Lisa Lisa’s fighting abilities, El Aleph is also great for making her stronger than ever. In the climax of the story, Lisa Lisa uses an Arrow to gain her own Stand, The House of Earth, and not only is it super strong and possesses the ability to create solar winds with the force of a hurricane, but it can generate Hamon with the combined power of every in history. The final fight is The House of Earth’s only appearance, but even so, El Aleph casually gave Lisa Lisa one of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

The biggest showing of The House of Earth’s strength, however, comes from its opponent. Lisa Lisa used The House of Earth against the eponymous El Aleph, a Requiem Stand that could create paralyzing darkness akin to nuclear winter and eldritch monsters that kill everyone in sight, and much like the other Requiem Stands, it was treated as being nigh-indestructible. Lisa Lisa defeating a Requiem Stand makes her one of the strongest and most competent Stand s in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, a massive leap from when she was given the short end of the stick in Battle Tendency.

Is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's New Novel Canon (And Does It Matter?)

How Does El Aleph Fit Into JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's Canon?

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: El Aleph is the great Lisa Lisa showing fans have been waiting decades to see, all of which begs the question of whether it’s even canon. While nothing in El Aleph directly contradicts pre-established lore, it was written by Junjo Shindo, not Hirohiko Araki, so there’s reason to doubt JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: El Aleph’s canonicity because it wasn’t written by the original creator. The same issue has appeared in the past with stories like OVER HEAVEN and Purple Haze , so it’s hard to deny that it’s an issue for El Aleph, as well.

At the end of the day, though, El Aleph’s canonicity shouldn’t be a problem. While it would be great for it to definitively fit within the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure canon, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great story for Lisa Lisa’s character and a great story, in general, so the quality of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: El Aleph should make its canonicity an overall non-issue. Stories don’t have to be canon to add something to their overarching franchises, and El Aleph is a perfect example of such that everyone should read.

Why El Aleph Is So Important For One Of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's Biggest Problems

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Is Finally Fixing Its Biggest Criticism

Above all else, the biggest reason why El Aleph is so great is that it fixes one of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s biggest problems: JoJo's treatment of female characters. Lisa Lisa’s poor treatment was one thing, but even after her, female characters in JoJo would almost always be given little to do in a story, usually only getting one big fight in a story, and sometimes not even that. This has always been an issue, and as such, Lisa Lisa getting such a great showing in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: El Aleph fixes the franchise’s ongoing issue with its female characters.

That isn’t to say steps weren’t already being taken to fix it, of course. Jolyne was created specifically so Hirohiko Araki could have another go at a female protagonist, leading to her becoming one of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s best protagonists, and not only did Stone Ocean have far more female heroes and villains than normal, but female characters, in general, have had much better showings from Steel Ball Run, onward. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has already been going to great lengths to treat its female characters better, and El Aleph is the latest example of such.

A big part of why JoJo has been so great for the past decade is thanks to the willingness to take things in new directions and improve on things that needed fixing, the treatment of female characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure a big part of that, so El Aleph needs to simply be the latest example of the series treating female characters well as opposed to an outlier. All of that arguably makes El Aleph JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s most important spinoff story, and with how great a story it is, any fan would truly be remiss to it up.
