It is quite common for manga artists to draw inspiration from other creators in the industry, and Kohei Horikoshi, creator of Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most beloved manga series of all time, and even Horikoshi calls himself a fan.
Horikoshi did not just state that he enjoys the series, he said that from the very beginning, he was "convinced that this series would carry Shonen Jump on its shoulders." Over the past few years, Jujutsu Kaisen has grown more popular than ever before, obtaining countless awards and accolades, and Horikoshi seems to have predicted this success even before it occurred.
Horikoshi Just Expressed His iration for Jujutsu Kaisen
He Explained That a Particular Piece of Art in Chapter 28 Sparked His Love of the Series
A post on @Go_Jover's X chronicles Horikoshi's praise of Jujutsu Kaisen, specifically, one illustration in particular that caught his eye. The art featured in chapter 28 is the My Hero Academia creator's favorite, and instantly made it clear to him that the shonen series had the potential to become something incredible. The image features two pivotal Jujutsu Kaisen characters, Yuji Itadori, the protagonist, and Mahito, one of the series' main villains. The two characters sit beside one another on a set of green steps, with a breathtaking background featuring outlines of vibrant white jellyfish behind them.
The drawing perfectly summarizes Jujutsu Kaisen creator, Gege Akutami's, artistic style and daring, unforgettable designs featured in his manga covers and s. In particular, Horikoshi pointed out Akutami's "unparalleled ability to make “stillness” look incredibly cool," since both characters are featured sitting down in the image, yet the drawing still completely captures the viewer's attention. It is evident that Horikoshi greatly ires Akutami's talent in both illustration and storywriting, as well as his ability to create a series that became such a cultural phenomenon. Little did Horikoshi realize his own series would reach a similar level of success.
Akutami Has Expressed His Adoration of My Hero Academia as Well
These Creators’ Love for One Another’s Work Is Mutual
Both of these mangaka clearly respect one another greatly, because Akutami has made similar iring comments about Horikoshi's series. Akutami praised My Hero Academia's ending, stating that, "Without My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen wouldn't have started either." His love for the superhero shonen is unmistakable, and it is truly remarkable that aspects of Horikoshi's work motivated Akutami to create his own unique series. These two authors' mutual love for each other's work goes to show just how often they take inspiration from each other, and Horikoshi and Akutami have both referenced other creators whose work they adore as well in the past.
