The Green Lantern ring wielded by Jo Mullein of Far Sector is one of a kind, and it’s fitting that the lone Lantern of her jurisdiction would be assigned a distinctive tool for her mission.

The Power Ring of depending on the imagination and willpower of the . A Central Power Battery, on the planet Oa, serves as a conduit to the power batteries in possession of the thousands of individual Green Lanterns scattered around the galaxy. Once their rings are depleted of energy, Lanterns return to their battery and recite the Oath to recharge. Prior to the current iteration of the rings, a version of the ring would be depleted once in a planet’s rotation, which shows the indispensable tool of the Lanterns can be, and have been, improved upon.

Sojourner “Jo” Mullein’s ring is an outlier from the rest of the Green Lantern Corps. Her ring can recharge without the use of a power battery.  She is posted in The City Enduring, a Dyson swarm planet, located so far on the edges of space that the Guardians may not have designated a sector for it. Details about her ring have been revealed slowly through Far Sector’s run. So far, it’s unclear where the source of the energy recharging the ring comes from. The general power levels scale lower than the standard ring. However, while the typical jewelry harnesses the ’s willpower to overcome fear, Jo’s ring harnesses the willpower to live with fear. It’s that distinction that gives her ring the potential to accomplish things no other Lantern could achieve.

Far Sector Green Lantern Ring

In Far Sector #9, Jo’s ring is slowly recharging after being completely drained of energy in the previous issue. Despite not having access to her Green Lantern abilities, she continues to uncover the murderous conspiracy she was sent to resolve. Mullein still manages to locate and infiltrate a guarded facility, using only her Brooklyn girl intuition and training from the U.S. armed forces and NYPD. In the process, proving herself resourceful enough to be deserving of the unique tool she has received.

The Guardian who appearance in previews for DC’s Future State are evidence she will continue on as a Lantern, in some capacity, past her deadline. What remains to be seen is if she’ll keep her experimental ring once the trial period is over.
