The surprising story for John Wick: Chapter 4 sets up a potential fifth installment in the franchise. While it’s at least possible that John’s story ends in his next movie, the possibility of John Wick 5 happening hasn’t been ruled out. There is at least a chance that the studio gets an additional movie out of Keanu Reeves’ character.
A clue as to how the franchise can keep his storyline going was provided by the John Wick 4 trailer. As John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’s ending suggested, John’s next challenge is to survive the battle with the High Table. However, his goal isn’t quite as ambitious as some suspected. With the third movie positioning him to be at odds with the High Table, it made sense that John Wick: Chapter 4 would focus on the character bringing down the organization. Instead, the movie will focus on John trying to appease the High Table. That means John actively fighting them is a story the franchise can reserve for John Wick 5.
The High Table’s Survival Is Good For John Wick 5
Apparently, John Wick's plan in the new movie is to get the High Table to leave him alone by winning a one-on-one fight with Bill Skarsgård’s Marquis de Gramont. In other words, John doesn’t want to destroy the High Table – yet. So, unless a twist happens and John does end up wiping them out, it’s looking increasingly likely that the High Table will still be intact when the movie ends. The group exists as a key part of John Wick’s lore, which is one more reason why its survival is a good sign for a potential fifth movie.
If the High Table were to fall in John Wick 4, the franchise would be hard-pressed to find a story with higher stakes for John Wick 5. After all, the High Table holds a ton of power and would be considered the ultimate enemy for the protagonist to defeat. As long as they’re around, the studio will have a good reason to justify a continuation of John’s story on the big screen. And based on the progression of events and what’s shown in the trailer, John Wick 5 may be the movie that finally pits Keanu Reeves’ character against the High Table.
How John Wick 4’s Ending Can Set Up A Fifth Movie
The John Wick: Chapter 4 trailer teases the very scenario that would set up a fight with the High Table in John Wick 5. John is supposed to beat the Marquis in a duel to the death, but if he winds up breaking their rules or loses the fight somehow, John would most assuredly lose any remaining chance he has of making peace with the High Table. If that were to happen, John’s only path forward would be to eliminate the entire organization for good. John hunting down each member individually is a story that could easily provide enough action for a full movie.
