The John Wick: Chapter 4 trailer hints at a fight that Keanu Reeves’ character might actually lose. The highly anticipated trailer for the fourth installment in the John Wick series previewed the battles John will have to overcome now that he’s earned the ire of the High Table. His actions in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum have set up new adversaries for John Wick to fight, including characters played by Donnie Yen and Bill Skarsgård.

Over the course of three movies, Keanu Reeves' John Wick has proven his prowess as a fighter. While he’s certainly gone up against several worthy opponents, none have managed to beat him decisively. However, the trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 is teasing a situation where John may not come out on top. The premise of the movie, presented by the trailer, is that John will have to fight Skarsgård’s Marquis de Gramont in single combat. Given the high stakes and the trailer’s focus on this particular fight, the implication is that Sarsgaard’s John Wick villain is formidable enough for John’s chances of winning to be called into question.

John Wick 4's Marquis Isn't John's Only Threat

As demonstrated by the John Wick 4 trailer, the Marquis actually isn’t the only threat John will need to be concerned with in John Wick: Chapter 4. Toward the end of the trailer, he was seen engaging in an intense fight with Donnie Yen’s Caine. Because of the kung fu star’s reputation as one of the best martial arts actors in the current era, it makes sense that Yen’s character will be depicted as an extremely skilled fighter. So regardless of what happens when John fights the Marquis, he could also meet his match when he squares off with Caine.

How John Losing Can Set Up John Wick 5

What takes place during his promised showdown with the Marquis can be used to lay the groundwork for John Wick 5. Winning would earn him “his one way out” and perhaps an ending to his story for good, but losing could extend his journey by at least one more movie. If he somehow survives (but doesn’t beat the Marquis), his conflict with the High Table would only worsen. He’d have no choice but to fight off assassin after assassin.

Whereas John Wick: Chapter 4 seems to be about John getting the High Table to let him go, John Wick 5 can take things to the next level by making him take a more aggressive approach. If he fails to appease the High Table, the fighting would eventually reach a point when wiping them out would be his only way forward. If he understands that a peaceful solution is no longer possible, John could spend his fifth movie hunting down each individual member of the High Table until the entire organization has been dismantled.
