Warning: SPOILERS ahead for John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick: Chapter 4director Chad Stahelski has revealed which franchise character he would most like to see get their own spinoff. Created by screenwriter Derek Kolstad and starring Keanu Reeves as the titular assassin, theJohn Wickfilms have gone on to become one of the most celebrated action franchises of all time. The franchise’s latest entry,John Wick: Chapter 4, has continued to build upon the continued success of its predecessors, breaking box-office records for the series and earning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

With John Wick: Chapter 4 seemingly putting an end to Reeve’s tenure as his famous assassin, Stahelski was asked by Looper which character he would most like to receive their own spinoff moving forward. While the series’ director suggested that Donny Yen’s Caine would be one most likely to “put my money” on, he also revealed that the character he would most like to see more of is Rina Sawayama’s Akira. Check out his original response below:

Now we're on "Chapter 4," and if I had to put my money somewhere, I would love to see what happens with Caine. But I want to watch what happens to Akira next. I'm a big Rina Sawayama fan, so that's the one I'd want to follow.

Originally plans had been laid for John Wick 5 to be filmed back-to-back with John Wick: Chapter 4, however, those plans were later changed with Stahelski initially citing the need to take a “creative breath” between films. However, with John Wick: Chapter 4 ending with the death of Reeves’ character, it seems increasingly unlikely that such a film will ever come to . Furthermore, earlier this year Stahelski also revealed that he was finished with the series, stating “This is my last one, this will never happen again.”

While audiences may never get another chance to see Reeves lead another John Wick film again, the franchise is still set to continue with two confirmed spinoffs already in the works. The spinoff prequel series, The Continental, is set to arrive on Peacock in late 2023. Set in the 1970s, the series will explore the origins of the titular hotel and assassin’s refuge. Additionally, the Ana de Armas led spinoff film Ballerina is currently set to debut in theaters on June 7, 2024.

At this stage, no additional spinoffs have been announced beyond these two projects, though Yen has itted that the idea of a potential Caine-centric project has already been floated by him. Much like Stahelski, however, many viewers are also hoping to see more of Sawayama’s Akira. Considered one of the breakout stars of John Wick: Chapter 4, Akira could easily carry her own spinoff film, with the latest film’s post-credit scene already teasing her character’s future. Whatever direction the franchise goes, it seems likely audiences will get to see much more of the John Wick universe moving forward.
