He’s one of the most popular characters in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure follows the misadventures of the Joestar clan – a family who have special powers and discover they are destined to battle the supernatural forces that plague the world. Each season of the anime focuses on a different generation of the Joestar family and Jotaro Kujo was the main protagonist of its second season, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders.
A stoic yet heroic high school delinquent, Jotaro Kujo was partly inspired by legendary Western actor Clint Eastwood, according to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure creator Hirohiko Araki. In Stardust Crusaders, Jotaro’s mother Holly Kujo falls gravely ill which is the catalyst for a mission that takes Jotaro and his grandfather Joseph Joestar from Japan to Egypt to defeat vampire villain Dio Brando. Like other of the Joestar family, Jotaro has a Stand, which is a psycho-spiritual manifestation of a person’s psyche with unique supernatural abilities that give them superhuman powers. Jotaro’s Stand is known as Star Platinum which gives him superhuman strength, speed, stamina and precision.
Although Jotaro Kujo wasn’t the protagonist of later seasons of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, he did appear as a ing character in both season 3 (AKA Diamond Is Unbreakable) and season 4 (AKA Golden Wind) of the anime. A fifth season of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was recently announced which is set to adapt the Stone Ocean arc of Hirohiko Araki’s manga. Jotaro also appears in the Stone Ocean manga arc so it’s likely he’ll feature in the season, but who voices Jotaro Kujo in the show?
There are two main Jotaro voice actors in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, with Daisuke Ono voicing the character’s original Japanese dub while Matthew Mercer voicing the English language dub. Daisuke Ono also voiced Jotaro in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure video games Eyes Of Heaven and All-Star Battle and is otherwise best known for his voicing Sebastian Michaelis in Black Butler and Shukuro Tsukishima in Attack On Titan or Leorio Paladiknight in Hunter x Hunter.
While Daisuke Ono and Matthew Mercer are the best-known Jotaro Kujo voice actors in the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise, they weren’t actually the first actors to voice the character. Back in the early 1990s, animation studio A.P.P.P. produced a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA series in which Jotaro was voiced by Jurota Kosugi in the Japanese version and by Abie Hadjitarkhani in the English dub.
