In a series of TikTok videos, JoJo's hair became news in 2020 after she returned to her natural brown color. JoJo’s hair loss became more apparent to fans after she ditched her signature ponytail for a pixie cut in April 2022. 

JoJo officially ed the cast of Dance Moms in season 5, after failing to secure a spot on the team during Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition. From the moment she appeared, she and her mother Jessalynn Siwa were marked as obnoxious and loud by not only the rest of the dance moms, but also Abby Lee Miller herself. However, JoJo’s talent and pure star quality led to a huge rise in popularity for the then preteen. JoJo has made history by participating as part of While on Dance Moms, she went on to start a Youtube channel where she gained a following of 12 million subscribers. JoJo left Dance Moms after securing a deal with Nickelodeon. Currently Jojo works as a judge of So You Think You Can Dance.

Like many former child stars of Dance Moms, the stress of competition dance combined with the abrasive personality of coach Abby and constant infighting between the dance moms led to mental health issues in adulthood. For JoJo, the show left not only mental scars but physical ones too. In a TikTok video, JoJo explained that she developed a stress rash on her head while filming Dance Moms. She revealed that she had a stress rash as a child and, due to constant hair picking, has permanently damaged the hair follicles in that spot, causing noticeably thinner hair near her hairline.

Controversial coach Abby was infamous on Dance Moms for her high expectations for dancers and often very abrasive way of handling children and customers alike. Many mothers on the show itted to quitting over Abby Miller’s racism towards them and their children. Jojo and her mother, Jess, often found themselves at odds with Abby during their two season run on Dance Moms. In the pyramid, Abby's ranking system in the studio, Jojo was often placed in the bottom or removed altogether. Despite this, JoJo and Abby seem to have an amicable relationship in 2022.  

While a new, larger, generation of child stars is ushered in via platforms like TikTok, the child stars of yesterday are still unpacking their drama. As fans move away from stereotyping them, more and more child stars are opening up about their experiences and lasting damage from being exploited for the sake of entertainment. Other Dance Moms alum, like fan favorites Maddie Ziegler and Nia Sioux have taken to YouTube to discuss recovering from the drama of the show. After years of controversy regarding the treatment of children on the show, Dance Moms was canceled amid contract negotiation issues. JoJo continues to rise as a star in the entertainment industry, despite her lengthy stay at the bottom of Abby’s pyramid.
