An art piece with 20 distinct profiles of the The LEGO Batman Movie.
Of course, the Joker was seen most recently onscreen thanks to Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar-winning turn last year. The Joker movie, which was directed by Todd Phillips, was controversial in many ways. Some saw it as glamorizing violence during an unfortunate time. However, many still approved of Phoenix's performance. In addition to the Oscar for Best Actor, Phoenix also took home the Golden Globe and BAFTA, among other accolades. His awards show speeches were a highlight as well, often calling attention to important causes.
Demetriou's Joker art, covering 20 different takes on the character, was posted to Reddit earlier by GhettoAvenueBoys. Demtriou then reacted to the Reddit response on Twitter, thanking everyone who offered their kind words. In addition to the pictures of the Joker through the years, Demetriou's art also features helpful captions below explaining which year and piece of media each Joker comes from. Check out his art and response below:
What's really striking about the Joker design is just how much the character's look has varied over the years. The white face, green hair, and red lips are nearly always there, but even the seemingly immutable purple jacket is only even present in 13 of the 20 images. It's also fascinating to think about which incarnations are included versus which have been left on the cutting room floor. After 80 years in the DC canon, the Joker is one of the longest-lasting comic characters.
Obviously Joker has had far more than 20 famous looks over the years, and it would be interesting to hear the elimination process behind omitting such iconic iterations as the jagged-toothed version of Tim Sale's '90s work (particularly in Batman: The Long Halloween) or the exaggerated lower jaw that José Luis García-López popularized for the character in the 1970s. However, what made it on the page is undoubtedly a fun stroll down memory lane for one of pop culture's most enduring creations.
